Early-life:
Born James Denton on January 20, 1963, in Nashville, Tennessee. He's the middle child of three siblings. His father was a dentist who was interested in amateur dramatics. After graduating from high school, Denton attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, gaining a degree in advertising and TV journalism. He didn't try acting until he was 23 when he was cast in a production of Our Town, which was organised as part of the state's bicentennial celebrations.
Career:
After spending four years selling advertising space for various TV and radio stations, Denton moved to Chicago to become a professional actor. Following five years of success on stage, he made his TV debut in The Untouchables. He also had small roles in Sliders, JAG and Dark Skies. After a number of little-seen movies, Denton cropped up in Face/Off, but it was a regular part in TV series The Pretender that finally made people sit up and take notice. Acclaimed projects such as Primary Colors, Philly and Threat Matrix followed, before Desperate Housewives catapulted him to international stardom.
Quote:
"I never anticipated any kind of attention outside of theatre audience when I got into acting, so all of it now is a little unnerving. However, it beats being on a show nobody's talking about."
