Early-life:
Samuel Henry John Worthington was born in Godalming, Surrey, on August 2, 1976 and moved to Perth, Western Australia, when he was six months old. He was brought up by his mother Jeanne and his sister Lucinda. He went on to attend John Curtin College of the Arts, a school specialising in dramatic arts. When he left college, his father gave him $400 and sent him on a one-way trip to Cairns, Queensland, and told him to work his way home. Sam worked on construction and odd jobs before settling in Sydney. At the age of 19, while working as a bricklayer, he was accepted into the National Institute of Dramatic Art. His first professional role came in the Belvoir Street Theatre's production of Judas Kiss.
Career:
Worthington began landing guest starring roles in a number of TV shows, including JAG, Water Rats and Blue Heelers. He made his film debut in the Australian movie Bootmen (2000). Film roles followed in Hart's War (2002), Dirty Deeds (2002) and Gettin' Square (2003). His first break came a year later when he landed his first lead role in Somersault (2004) opposite Abbie Cornish. His international career took off in 2009 after playing Marcus Wright in James Cameron's Avatar. Since then, he has starred in Terminator Salvation (2009), Clash of the Titans (2010), Last Night (2010), Texas Killing Fields (2011), Wrath of the Titans (2012) and Cake (2014). Avatar sequels are in the pipeline.
