Early-life:
Christian Charles Philip Bale was born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, on January 30, 1974. He has three older sisters. His father was a commercial pilot, his mother a circus dancer. Performing runs in the family - his grandfather was a comedian and children's entertainer, while his great uncle was an actor and John Wayne's stand-in for two movies. Christian was raised in England, Portugal and California, and made his acting debut in a cereal commercial in 1983.
Career:
At the age of 10, Christian made his West End debut in The Nerd, opposite Rowan Atkinson. He was hand-picked from 4,000 auditionees to take the lead role in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun in 1987. Unlike many child stars, he has successfully made the transition to serious grown-up actor. Films since include Little Women, The Portrait of a Lady, Velvet Goldmine, American Psycho, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Shaft, Reign of Fire, Equilibrium and The Machinist. His status soared after playing Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins and its sequels. His other recent films have included The Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma, Terminator Salvation, Public Enemies, The Fighter (for which he won an Oscar) and American Hustle.

Early-life:
Matthew David McConaughey was born in Texas on November 4, 1969, and is the youngest of three brothers. His teacher mother and oil-pipe salesman father had something of a volatile relationship - during their 39 years together, they divorced and remarried each other several times. Matthew's original ambition was to be a lawyer, and after graduating from high school, he spent a year in Australia as an exchange student. However, while at university, he developed a passion for acting, and decided to study film.
Career:
During the early 1990s, McConaughey combined his studies with appearances in adverts, before winning an eye-catching part in the cult movie Dazed and Confused. He made an even bigger splash in 1996, when he won the starring role in the John Grisham adaptation A Time to Kill, which was a major hit worldwide. He's been a popular Hollywood leading man ever since, and his movie credits include Amistad, EDtv, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Sahara, Failure to Launch, Tropic Thunder, and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. In more recent years McConaughey has proved his versatility with roles in more challenging movies, Magic Mike, Bernie, The Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won an Oscar, and Interstellar. He also starred in the first season of acclaimed TV series True Detective.

Early-life:
Born on November 13, 1969, in Glasgow, he's the youngest of three children. His parents divorced when he was young, and he had little contact with his father until he was 16, when they became close; Gerard was devastated when his dad died of cancer six years later. He attended the University of Glasgow, where he studied law, eventually becoming president of the school's Law Society. He also spent a year living in California. Gerard landed a trainee lawyer's position at an Edinburgh law firm, but was fired a week before gaining his qualifications.
Career:
Butler's first role of note was in a stage production of Coriolanus directed by Steven Berkoff. After playing the character of Renton in the stage adaptation of Trainspotting, he made his big-screen debut in Mrs Brown. Small roles in James Bond outing Tomorrow Never Dies and Tale of the Mummy followed. His sensuous turn as Dracula in Wes Craven's horror caught the eye, and he's been busy ever since. Among his biggest projects since are the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, 300, RocknRolla, PS I Love You and Law Abiding Citizen. Butler is clearly a man who likes to keep busy - he usually has lots of films in various stages of production.
