McKidd loved his childhood 'running around the fields' near his home and allegedly fell into acting because he believed he was too overweight for football. When he appeared in a school play 'everyone laughed either because I was fat, or because I was being funny... it was a good buzz.'
Career: After studying engineering at an Edinburgh College he switched to drama. He landed a part before the course ended, in the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow. Other roles followed, including his breakthrough performance as the ill-fated Tommy in Trainspotting. Subsequent movies have included Regeneration, Hideous Kinky, Dog Soldiers and Mike Leigh's Topsy Turvy. On TV he has played Anna Karenina's love interest, Count Vronsky, in Channel 4's classic adaptation, and more recently, Mary Queen of Scots' lover in Gunpowder, Treason & Plot.

More musical stage work followed, as did roles in Secret Army, Bergerac, The Mallens, Love in a Cold Climate, and Accident. The Gold Blend ads in the late 1980s, in which he co-starred with Sharon Maughan, were hugely popular and made him a household name. They even went down well in America, paving the way for his successful run in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Since then, Head has returned to the UK, appearing in such projects as Little Britain, Doctor Who, Manchild, Sold, The Invisibles and Merlin.
