Christopher Lee (Actor) .. Sherlock Holmes
Born: May 27, 1922 in Belgravia, London
Best Known For: Playing Dracula.
Early-life: Born Christopher Frank Carandini Lee on May 27, 1922, in Belgravia, London, the son of an Italian aristocrat and a soldier. He had an older sister, Xandra, whose daughter is actress Harriet Walter. When their parents divorced, the children were raised by their mother and her second husband, a banker. Lee attended Wellington College, then worked in a London shipping office before serving in the RAF during the Second World War. On being demobbed, he was snapped up by Rank Studios, but failed to get a big break, appearing instead in several small roles.
Career: Lee hit the big time in 1957 when his formidable height landed him the role of the monster in Hammer's The Curse of Frankenstein. It marked the beginning of his horror movie partnership with Peter Cushing, which also included such films as Dracula, The Mummy, and The Gorgon. Lee went on to become one of the world's most prolific actors. Star Wars episodes II and III and The Lord of the Rings introduced him to a new generation of fans. Other significant titles include The Wicker Man, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Gremlins II, The Man with the Golden Gun and The Golden Compass. He also appeared in Alice in Wonderland, Burke and Hare, Season of the Witch and The Hobbit. He died on June 7, 2015, at the age of 93 due to respiratory problems and heart failure.
Quote: 'There are many vampires in the world today - you only have to think of the film business.'
Trivia: Lee was knighted in 2009. Away from acting, he was an accomplished singer and had an intriguing sideline as a heavy metal star.
Patrick Macnee (Actor) .. Dr Watson
Born: February 06, 1922 in London
Best Known For: Playing John Steed in The Avengers.
Early-life: Born Daniel Patrick Macnee on February 6, 1922, in London. His father was a successful racehorse trainer who gambled away his fortune and emigrated to India. His mother then divorced her husband and moved in with her lesbian lover in Wiltshire. Macnee attended Summer Fields prep school before enrolling at Eton. He made his film debut in 1938's Pygmalion, but his acting career was curtailed by a spell in the Navy during the Second World War.
Career: On his return from service, Macnee studied at the Webber Douglas School of Dramatic Art. Small roles in several films followed but, frustrated at the lack of opportunity in Britain, he emigrated to Canada, then moved to the US. He appeared in numerous TV plays and films before returning to the UK in 1959. Producing Winston Churchill: The Valiant Years brought him to the attention of TV bosses who, to his surprise, offered him the role of John Steed in The Avengers in 1961. He stayed with the popular series until it ended in 1969, but returned to the role in The New Avengers in 1976. Macnee also appeared in such movies as A View to a Kill, This Is Spinal Tap and The Sea Wolves. He died on June 25, 2015.
Quote: 'I haven't really accomplished anything. The most accomplished thing I've done is to have lived this long.'
Trivia: Macnee became a US citizen in 1959.
Morgan Fairchild (Actor) .. Irene Adler
John Bennett (Actor) .. Sigmund Freud
Engelbert Humperdinck (Actor) .. Eberhardt Bohm
Born: May 02, 1936 in Madras
Best Known For: His hit single Release Me.
Early-life: Born Arnold George Dorsey on May 2, 1936, in Madras, India. He is one of 10 children born to soldier Mervyn and his wife Olive, who had Indian heritage. The family settled in Leicester when Arnold was 10, and he showed an early aptitude for music while learning the saxophone - although he didn't try singing until he was persuaded to enter a pub competition at 17. His impersonation of Jerry Lewis led him to be known professionally as Gerry Dorsey for a spell.
Career: After completing his national service, Dorsey recorded his first single, I'll Never Love Again, in 1958 - it flopped. A bout of TB set him back too, but teaming with his friend Gordon Mills, who was Tom Jones' manager, led to him being named after a 19th-century composer, and suddenly fame beckoned. European singing contests boosted his profile, and his 1967 single Release Me became a massive hit on both sides of the Atlantic. A string of hits followed, and he quickly gained many female fans known as Humperdinckers who tagged him the King of Romance.
Quote: 'It's an absolute honour to be representing my country for this year's Eurovision Song Contest. When the BBC approached me, it just felt right for me to be a part of an institution like Eurovision. I'm excited and raring to go and want the nation to get behind me!'
Trivia: He represented the UK in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. He came 25th out of 26.
