After leaving school, he spent several months as a cattle-herder in Argentina before gaining an English Literature degree from Trinity College, Dublin.
Career: West enjoyed early success on the stage, and appeared in several movies, including Spice World and Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace before taking a break to join the acrobatic Argentinean circus De La Guarda. He then had a supporting role in Chicago before landing the part of drunken but lovable detective McNulty in hugely acclaimed TV series The Wire. West has also appeared in 300, Hannibal Rising and The Devil's Whore. In 2011 he received critical acclaim for his roles as TV news anchor Hector Madden in the 1950s-set BBC drama The Hour and serial killer Fred West in ITV1 drama Appropriate Adult. He also continues to appear on stage, most notably in his native Sheffield.
Quote: 'I don't know why British actors are getting big parts in American TV shows. Maybe it's because we're cheap.'
Trivia: Away from acting, he's a Sheffield Wednesday supporter.

Born: January 13, 1982 in Ashford, Kent
Maura Tierney (Actor) .. Helen Solloway
Born: February 03, 1965 in Boston, Massachusetts
Best Known For: Playing nurse-turned-doctor Abby in ER.
Early-life: Maura Therese Tierney was born on February 3, 1965, in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in the city's affluent Hyde Park area. Her mother was a part-time estate agent, her father a prominent local politician, and she has two younger siblings. Maura attended New York University, but dropped out before graduation to go to theatre school instead. To make ends meet while studying, she sold T-shirts door-to-door in college halls of residence. Eventually moved to Los Angeles to find work as an actress.
Career: Tierney's acting career took a while to take off. She landed parts in TV series The Van Dyke Show and 704 Hauser, but both shows were cancelled after a few episodes. However, in 1995 she won a role in the successful US sitcom NewsRadio, while her performances in the films Primal Fear, Liar Liar, and Forces of Nature brought her to the attention of UK audiences. In 2000, she joined the cast of ER as Abby Lockhart, and was nominated for an Emmy award the following year. She's also appeared in the movies Insomnia and Welcome to Mooseport. Her recent output includes Semi-Pro, Baby Mama, Finding Amanda, Rescue Me, and The Whole Truth.

He has a sister, Aisleagh, and two half-brothers from his father's second marriage.

Instead, he landed a role in a commercial for British Columbia tourism. His first movie was Crooked Hearts in 1991. A year later he starred in The Mighty Ducks, and went on to appear in the film's first two sequels. Dawson's Creek made him a star in 1998.
