The Talented Mr Ripley.
Early-life:
Born David Jude Heyworth Law on December 29, 1972, in Lewisham, South East London, he grew up in Blackheath. His parents were teachers who were interested in amateur dramatics, and now run their own theatre company in France. Law hated the amount of violence and bullying that went on at his local comprehensive, so was sent to a private school. He also joined the National Youth Music Theatre at 12.
Career:
Law made his TV debut in 1989's The Tailor of Gloucester, and a year later left school to take a role in daytime soap Families. During his early twenties, he spent much of his time on stage, where he gained numerous plaudits. His first film, Shopping, wasn't a success, but he made a name for himself in Wilde. Appearances in Gattaca, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, eXistenZ and AI: Artificial Intelligence cemented his reputation. He gained an Oscar nomination for The Talented Mr Ripley in 1999, and another for Cold Mountain four years later. Other projects include Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, The Aviator and The Holiday. His more recent roles include a part in Guy Ritchie's takes on Sherlock Holmes, playing Dr Watson. He also occasionally appears in stage productions.
Quote:
"I think it's a bigger risk following a part that plays up your looks than it is to try to carve out a career as an actor."
