Early-life:
Born in Cardiff on August 17, 1943. His father worked as a french polisher, despite losing his sight at an early age, and supported five children. After leaving Cardiff High School at the age of 15, John started reporting for newspapers. He did this for six years before becoming a scriptwriter and reporter for independent TV. He joined the BBC in 1966 as a reporter based in Liverpool and at 28-years-old became the first full-time TV correspondent in the US and the youngest foreign correspondent. During his time in America he covered stories including the revolution in Chile and Watergate.
Career:
John began presenting BBC Radio 4's Today programme in 1989. His time on the show has earned him a reputation as a tough interviewer. During his years at the BBC, he has worked on countless projects, including On The Record, the Nine O'clock News, Panorama and You Decide. He took over from Magnus Magnusson as host of the TV quiz show Mastermind in 2003, and appeared in the reality show Art School. Humphrys has won many industry awards and is one of TV's most respected journalists.
