Early-life: Judith Olivia Dench was born on December 9, 1934, in York, the daughter of a doctor and his Irish wife. She attended Mount School, a Quaker institution, alongside author AS Byatt. She made her stage debut there - as a snail. Originally intending to be an artist, the experience changed her mind. She was also inspired by backstage visits to York Theatre Royal, where her father was the company's GP. She followed older brother Jeffrey to the Central School Of Speech And Drama.
Career: Dench made her professional debut with the Old Vic Company before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961, and has frequently worked on stage ever since. She became a household name in the 1980s thanks to sitcom A Fine Romance, for which she won a Bafta. She's also won the award for Four in the Morning, Talking to a Stranger, Iris, The Last of the Blonde Bombshells, Shakespeare In Love (for which she picked up an Oscar too), A Handful of Dust, Mrs Brown and A Room With a View. Other notable productions include Chocolat, Notes on a Scandal, J Edgar, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel, and several Bond movies, including Skyfall, in which she bowed out as M.
Quote: 'I just feel incredibly lucky to be employed. That's why I sometimes feel desperate, in case I'm not going to be cast again.'
Trivia: She became a Dame of the British Empire in 1988.
Ali Fazal (Actor) .. Abdul Karim
Tim Pigott-Smith (Actor) .. Sir Henry Ponsonby
Born: May 13, 1946 in Rugby
Best Known For: The Jewel in the Crown.
Early-life: Tim Pigott-Smith was born on May 13, 1946, in Rugby. He graduated with honours from the University of Bristol (he frequently returns there as a guest drama lecturer) in 1967, and completed his acting training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. On leaving, he went straight into the theatre, appearing in numerous plays and winning supporting roles on the small and big screens, including a couple of Dr Who adventures and Clash of the Titans.
Career: Pigott-Smith's big break came in 1984 when he landed one of the lead roles in ITV's Jewel in the Crown, the lavish miniseries which was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. He's worked steadily ever since, most notably appearing in The Remains of the Day, The Chief and The Bullion Boys, as well as narrating documentaries, audio books, appearing on stage in such productions as The Iceman Cometh, alongside Kevin Spacey, and directing various plays. His credits also include appearances in a number of hit movies, including Gangs of New York, Johnny English, Alexander, V for Vendetta, Quantum of Solace and Alice in Wonderland.
Quote: 'If something isn't done very soon to draw people, especially young people, back into classical theatre, it could die out completely in the next 25 years.'
Eddie Izzard (Actor) .. Bertie, Prince of Wales
Born: February 07, 1962 in Aden, Yemen
Best Known For: His whimsical stand-up routines.
Early-life: Born Edward John Izzard on February 7, 1962, in Aden, Yemen, while his father was on business there for BP. His mother was a midwife who died of cancer in 1968, after which he and his older brother, Mark, were sent to boarding schools. The family moved around a lot, living in Northern Ireland, then South Wales, before settling in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. After attending boarding school, he studied accountancy at Sheffield University, but dropped out. He claims that by four he knew he was a transvestite, and by seven that he wanted to be an actor.
Career: Izzard was a street performer before tackling stand-up at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and London's comedy clubs. He then began touring the country. Sell-out gigs led to acting roles. He's since become a star in the US and his movie credits include Velvet Goldmine, Mystery Men, Shadow of the Vampire, Ocean's Twelve and Thirteen, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Valkyrie. He starred alongside Minnie Driver in two seasons of US drama The Riches. Izzard also played Grandpa in Mockinbird Lane, a revamp of classic series The Munsters, and has had a regular role in Hannibal. He continues to tour with his stand-up routines.
Quote: 'I can go from blokey to girlie in 15 minutes and then I'm out the door. But that's the fastest I can do it. Becoming a woman takes work.'
Trivia: He won a special BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 2009 after raising money for Sport Relief by completing 43 marathons in 51 days despite having no prior history of running.
Adeel Akhtar (Actor) .. Mohammed

Michael Gambon (Actor) .. Lord Salisbury
Born: October 19, 1940 in Dublin
Best Known For: The Singing Detective and the Harry Potter movies.
Early-life: Michael John Gambon was born in Dublin on October 19, 1940. His family moved to London after the Second World War, where his engineer father worked on rebuilding the city. His mother was a seamstress. Gambon's parents registered him as a British citizen around this time, enabling him to receive a knighthood in 1998. He hated school, and left at 15 with no qualifications. Despite wanting to be an actor, he followed his father into engineering for seven years before training at RADA.
Career: Gambon became a member of Laurence Olivier's first Royal National Theatre company, and made his movie debut in 1965's Othello, alongside the star. His role in long-running TV show The Borderers led to an audition for James Bond. Parts in such forgettable productions as The Beast Must Die and Nothing But the Night came next. It was The Singing Detective in 1986 that finally made him a star. He's worked steadily ever since in the likes of Maigret, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Gosford Park, Doctor Who, Quartet, Sleepy Hollow and Fortitude. He took over playing Dumbledore in Harry Potter following the death of Richard Harris. He's won BAFTA TV awards for Perfect Strangers, Longitude, Wives and Daughters, and The Singing Detective.
Quote: 'Theatre actors are just tolerated. You have to be a movie star to be a celebrity.'
Trivia: Auditioned for the role of James Bond after George Lazenby left the series, but was turned down because they didn't want to hire another unknown.
