Rick Astley (Performer)
Born: February 03, 1966 in Newton-le-Willows
Best Known For: His chart-topping single Never Gonna Give You Up
Early-life: Rick Paul Astley was born in Newton-le-Willows on February 3, 1966. As a child he attended St Peter's Primary School and Selwyn James High School, earning respect and acclaim for his vocal skills from a young age. As well as singing, he learnt how to play the drums, guitar, keyboard and saxophone. As part of the boyband FBI, he performed at local venues. During one of these sets in 1985, he was spotted by music mogul Pete Waterman who became the catalyst for his early career.
Career: Two years after his first meeting with Waterman, Rick released his debut single, Never Gonna Give You Up. It went straight to number one, making him a household name. Other hits followed, including Together Forever, She Wants to Dance With Me, and his acclaimed cover of Nat King Cole's When I Fall in Love. In 1988 he was nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy Award, but as the decade drew to a close, success waned. He returned in 1993 with a new album, but this failed to set the charts on fire, so following the birth of his daughter, he unofficially retired from the industry. In 2004, he toured for the first time in 14 years.
Quote: On his career to date and new album, Portrait: "I've come full circle. I'm so removed from 1987, I can look back on it myself and say 'Wasn't that a bit of fun?'"
Trivia: He has sold more than 40 million records worldwide.
Whitney Houston (Performer)
Born: August 09, 1963 in East Orange, New Jersey
Best Known For: Her number one cover version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You.
Early-life: Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on 9th August, 1963, in East Orange, New Jersey, to gospel and blues singer Cissy Houston. Music was always a major part of her life, as her mother was already a veteran performer by the time she was born and her aunt, Dionne Warwick, was a global star. The young Whitney was a diva in the making, but her family was keen for her to gain a good education before she devoted herself to music.
Career: Houston initially worked as a model, but her remarkable vocal ability quickly landed her a recording contract and led to one hit single and album after another. In 1992, she made her movie debut alongside Kevin Costner in box-office hit The Bodyguard, and went on to star in Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife. She returned to the music scene in 2009 when she released her seventh studio album, I Look to You, and embarked on a major tour a year later. She died on February 11, 2012. Her body was recovered from a bath at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. She was 48.
Quote: On dealing with her drug and alcohol problems: 'I looked within my soul. I partied my tail off, but now that's over. I talked to people who went to rehab and I decided it's more of what's in your soul. I'm praying every day.'
Trivia: In 2001, Houston was the first artist to be given a BET Lifetime Achievement Award.

Best Known For: A string of globally popular hits
Early-life: Genevieve Alison Jane Moyet was born in Billericay, Essex on 18 June, 1961 to a French father and English mother. She grew up in Basildon. After leaving school at 16, she worked as a shop worker and trained as a piano tuner. She was involved in a number of punk rock, pub rock and blues bands during the late 1970s and early 1980s, including the Vandals and the Screamin' Ab Dabs, the Vicars and the Little Roosters.
Career: Moyet's mainstream pop career began in 1981 when she formed the synthpop duo Yazoo with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke. Hits followed on both sides of the Atlantic before they split and she embarked upon a successful solo career. Her debut solo album, Alf, was a huge hit in Britain, reaching number one in the album charts. Alf spawned three international hit singles, including Love Resurrection. Further albums followed before she took a break from the music industry. In 2002, she released her first studio album in eight years. She continues to record and release albums.
Quote: 'Becoming famous is a really shocking thing, especially when you don't have aspirations to it.'
Trivia: In 2001, Moyet made her West End debut in the hit musical Chicago.
Boy George (Performer)
Born: June 14, 1961 in Bexley, Kent
Best Known For: His stunning singing voice.
Early-life: Born George Alan O'Dowd in Eltham, Kent, on June 14, 1961. He comes from a working-class Irish background and has four brothers and a sister. George became interested in clothes and music at an early age thanks to his admiration of David Bowie. He performed his first gig as a DJ in 1979, but by then was already famous on London's club scene for his outrageous outfits and partying lifestyle. He was often seen with his friend Marilyn, who also had a brief spell as a pop star, at The Blitz, a club run by Steve Strange of Visage.
Career: George's flamboyant persona led Malcolm McLaren to employ him as co-lead singer in Bow Wow Wow, but the partnership proved short-lived. In 1982, George formed Culture Club with bass player Mikey Craig, drummer Jon Moss, and guitar and keyboards player Roy Hay. The group were a major success around the world thanks to George's image and singles such as Church of the Poisoned Mind and Karma Chameleon. The band split in 1986, but reformed in the late 1990s. The singer has enjoyed some solo success and penned two volumes of autobiography, in which he candidly discussed personal issues, including his battles with drug addiction. He also co-wrote hit musical Taboo and performs as a DJ. In 2013, he released his first solo album in 18 years called This is What I Do.
Quote: 'I think everybody wants to be famous now and they don't quite know why they want to be famous.'
Trivia: Arguably the strangest entry on George's CV is his appearance in an episode of The A-Team, in which he played himself.
