Best Known For:
Being lampooned on Bo' Selecta!
Early-life:
Born May 5, 1981, he grew up on a council estate in Southampton, the son of a musician. Was interested in music from an early age thanks to his mother, who passed on her love for Terence Trent D'Arby by taking him to see the singer live. David was also a fan of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. He began writing lyrics at 13 and a year later had his own slot on a local pirate radio station, playing R&B and hip-hop. Began DJing at Southampton's clubs shortly afterwards.
Career:
In 1996, his song I'm Ready won a national competition and was recorded by Damage as a B-side. That brought him to the attention of Mark Hill, one half of acclaimed production duo Artful Dodger. They began writing together and released their first hit, Rewind. Since then, David's rise to pop stardom has been meteoric. He became the youngest male solo artist ever to have a debut No 1 single thanks to Fill Me In, which he followed up with Seven Days. His first album, Born To Do It (named after a line in his favourite film, Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory) went quadruple platinum. Has won several gongs, including two MTV Awards, six MOBOs and six Ivor Novellos. His latest album is The Story Goes and he is currently preparing for a tour.
