Best Known For: Her consistently high quality performances.
Early-life: Born Laura Leggett Linney on February 5, 1964, in New York. Her mother was a nurse, her father a playwright - it was his work which initially attracted her to acting. She has a half-sister, Susan, from her dad's second marriage. After graduating from high school in 1982, Linney studied at Northwestern University, then transferred to Brown University, where she became a prolific amateur stage actress. She later had spells studying acting at Juilliard and the Arts Theatre School in Moscow.
Career: Linney's professional career began on Broadway, where she was acclaimed for her work in several productions. She started appearing in small roles in films and on TV in the early 1990s, but began landing bigger parts after the first instalment of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City was broadcast. Movies Primal Fear, The Truman Show and Absolute Power followed. She reunited with the director of Absolute Power, Clint Eastwood, for Mystic River, and bagged Oscar nominations for Kinsey, You Can Count on Me and The Savages. Other notable work includes Love Actually, Frasier, and The Squid and the Whale, while her extraordinary turns in miniseries John Adams and comedy drama The Big C have been widely acclaimed.
Quote: 'A lifetime of work, particularly where you get to see an actor grow and change, is better than becoming a rock 'n' roll movie star.'
Trivia: Linney has received Tony Award nominations for The Crucible, Sight Unseen, and Time Stands Still.
Kathy Bates (Actor) .. Eileen Dunne
Born: June 28, 1948 in Memphis, Tennessee
Best Known For: Breaking James Caan's ankles in Misery.
Early-life: Born Kathleen Doyle-Bates on June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, the youngest of three sisters. Her father, Langdon, was a mechanical engineer, while her mother, Bertye, was a housewife. She became hooked on acting at an early age and, after graduating from White Station High School in Memphis, enrolled at Dallas's Southern Methodist University. She originally intended to study English, but opted for theatre instead. Her parents weren't supportive of her career choice at first, but changed their minds after seeing her on stage.
Career: During the 1970s, Bates concentrated on New York stage work. Her first film was 1971's Taking Off, and she continued to work steadily on TV and in movies until her big break in 1990's Misery. She won an Oscar for her portrayal of a psychotic nurse in the production. Bates disrobed for the films At Play in the Fields of the Lord and About Schmidt (which also landed her an Oscar nomination), and won acclaim for Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and Primary Colors. She's also appeared in Titanic, Dolores Claiborne and The Waterboy. She had a lead role in David E Kelley's American TV legal comedy-drama Harry's Law.
Quote: 'Every time an Oscar is given out, an agent gets his wings.'
Trivia: Bates has fought ovarian cancer and breast cancer.
Maggie Smith (Actor) .. Lily Fox
Born: December 28, 1934 in Ilford, Essex
Best Known For: The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Downton Abbey.
Early-life: Margaret Nathalie Smith was born on December 28, 1934, in Ilford, Essex. She was named after her Glaswegian secretary mother. Her father was a pathologist from Newcastle. Her older twin brothers were both architects. At the outbreak of the Second World War, the family moved to Oxford. Smith left school at 16 after deciding an academic career wasn't for her. She immediately joined the Oxford Playhouse, spending the next four years testing her skills in a wide variety of roles.
Career: Smith rose to prominence on stage during the 1950s thanks to regular West End roles. Her first film, 1956's Child in the House, didn't set the box office alight, but she eventually gained international acclaim thanks to her role in Othello nine years later. She won an Oscar for 1969's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and has since appeared in such acclaimed productions as California Suite (for which she picked up another Academy Award), A Room with a View, and Gosford Park. She became a Dame of the British Empire in 1990. More recently, Smith gained a new fan base thanks to her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies, appeared in the films Ladies in Lavender and Keeping Mum, and TV series Downton Abbey. She has also battled breast cancer.
Quote: 'It's true I don't tolerate fools but then they don't tolerate me, so I am spiky. Maybe that's why I'm quite good at playing spiky elderly ladies.'
Trivia: Clint Eastwood is a big fan and for years has harboured the dream of working with her.
