In the Victorian era, the residents of the house on Calton Hill include Thomas Mains, a maker of expensive shoes whose customers won't pay. His wife, Ann, eventually takes the customers to court after his death. David Olusoga also assesses the lives of Thomas Glen, a famous bagpipe maker who runs a musical instrument shop in the city, photographer Archibald Burns, and a brothel-keeper, the mysterious Catherine Johnston
