Born: February 19, 1967 in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Best Known For: The Usual Suspects, Traffic and Che.
Early-life: Benicio Monserrate Rafael del Toro Sánchez was born in Puerto Rico on February 19, 1967, the son of lawyer parents Gustavo and Fausta Sanchez Del Toro. A basketball player with an interest in acting, he decided to follow the family way and study business at the University of California in San Diego. A class in acting resulted in him being bitten by the acting bug, and he subsequently dropped out and began studying with legendary acting teacher Stella Adler in Los Angeles and at the Circle in the Square Acting School in New York City.
Career: After a few sporadic TV roles, del Toro landed the role of Dario, the vicious henchman in the James Bond film Licence to Kill. He followed it with several notable movie roles but really came to critics' attentions as the mumbling, mysterious gangster in The Usual Suspects in 1995. Staying true to his independent roots, he next gave a charismatic turn as cold-blooded gangster Gaspare in The Funeral. A couple of years later, he took a leading role with Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Gaining 40 pounds for the role of Dr. Gonzo, the drug-addicted lawyer to sports writer Raoul Duke, Benicio immersed himself totally in the role. He won an Oscar for his role in Traffic and also gave a notable performance in Snatch, The Pledge and 21 Grams. His recent films include Sin City, Che, The Wolfman and Somewhere. He is now one of Hollywood's most sought after leading men.
Quote: "I'd like to do completely different roles - a romantic lead, for example. I'd like to be dressed up in a suit and get the girl at the end of the movie."
Trivia: In 2012, del Toro received an honorary degree from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico.
