An oil rig lifeboat owner tries to get his build shipshape and plush enough to convince his partner to move on board. Plus, George and contributor Will Hardie indulge in a slice of Africa in the Midlands, and Will visits an awe-inspiring Thomas Heatherwick building in Leeds that puts nature at its very heart

Born: May 27, 1974 in Washington, Tyne and Wear
Best Known For: Fronting an array of property programmes.
Early-life: Born in Sunderland on May 27, 1974. His dad, also called George, died when he was six and mum Anne eventually remarried. The new family moved to nearby Blackfell, where they still live. The former Oxclose Comprehensive pupil knew from an early age that buildings and design were for him. His grandparents were builders and he spent much of his youth working on sites. He became a star student at Wearside College and then Newcastle University before landing a job with the architect Sir Terry Farrell in London.
Career: Clarke was asked write a book on architecture and as his literary agent also worked with broadcasters, he was asked to screentest for the role of presenter of Channel 5 series Build a New Life in the Country. He later moved to Channel 4 where he started out on such series as The Home Show and Restoration Man, and has since branched out with George Clarke's Amazing Spaces. He continues to write books about property and in 2011 left his company clarke:desai to set up new firm George Clarke + Partners.
Quote: 'A home should have character, have your stamp on it, and that is what I am trying to get over to people. You don't need to get into huge debt to do up your home, and why do all that work to then leave it.'
Trivia: Away from work, he is a passionate supporter of Sunderland FC.
