Paul Newman (Actor) .. Ari Ben Canaan
Born: January 26, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio
Best Known For: Playing Butch Cassidy.
Early-life: Paul Leonard Newman was born on January 26, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio. He had an older brother. His father ran a sports shop and his mother helped out. Newman excelled in sports and took a keen interest in theatre, making his debut as a court jester in a school production of Robin Hood. After graduating from Shaker Heights High School in 1943, he attended Ohio University. During the Second World War he served in the Navy, and later studied at Kenyon College. He also studied acting at Yale University and at the Actors' Studio in New York City.
Career: Newman began his career on stage, although he will always be best known for his movies. He won acclaim in the late 1950s for the films Somebody up There Likes Me, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Young Philadelphians. The 1960s proved to be a hugely successful time for the actor, with movies such as The Hustler, Hud and Cool Hand Luke sealing his popularity. His partnership with Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid also cemented his reputation as a Hollywood legend. Other box office hits include The Towering Inferno, The Sting, The Color of Money and Road to Perdition. He retired from acting in 2007 and died a year later at the age of 83. He was also the founder of food company Newman's Own, the after-tax profits of which go to charity.
Quote: 'I was always a character actor. I just looked like Little Red Riding Hood.'
Trivia: Newman had three children with his first wife, Jackie Witte, and three with his second, Joanne Woodward.
Ralph Richardson (Actor) .. Gen Sutherland
Eva Marie Saint (Actor) .. Kitty Fremont
Peter Lawford (Actor) .. Maj Caldwell
Born: September 07, 1923 in London
Best Known For: Being a member of the Rat Pack.
Early-life: Peter Sydney Ernest Aylen Lawford was born in London on September 7, 1923 to Lieutenant General Sydney Lawford and May Bunny. Peter spent his early childhood in France. He made his acting debut at the age of seven in the film Poor Old Bill (1931). At the age of 14, he injured his right arm in an accident when he went through a glass door. It was serious enough to prevent him from joining the armed forces. He decided to pursue a career as an actor instead.
Career: Lawford signed a contract with MGM and made his Hollywood debut in a minor part in the film Lord Jeff (1938). His first significant role came in A Yank at Eton (1942), where he played a snobbish bully. His first leading role came in Son of Lassie (1945). He starred with Frank Sinatra for the first time in the musical It Happened in Brooklyn (1947). He went on to have supporting roles in a number of other MGM films. His first film after leaving MGM was It Should Happen to You (1954) alongside Jack Lemmon and Judy Holliday. In 1959, Frank Sinatra invited him join the Rat Pack. Ocean's 11 (1960) was the first project to feature all five main Rat Pack members, Lawford, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and Joey Bishop. Later films included The Longest Day (1962) and Advise & Consent (1962). When a planned visit to Sinatra's home by President John F Kennedy broke down, Sinatra blamed Lawford, who was Kennedy's brother-in-law at the time, and Lawford was never associated with the Rat Pack again. Lawford went on to star in more films and made appearances in a number of TV shows, including The Doris Day Show, Fantasy Island, and The Love Boat. Lawford died in Los Angeles on December 24, 1984 at the age of 61, from cardiac arrest.
Quote: 'Despite everything, I have few regrets. I have crammed a lot of living into my time.'
Trivia: Lawford became an American citizen in 1960.
