Early-life:
Sheryl Suzanne Crow was born in Kennett, Missouri, on February 11, 1962. Her father was a lawyer who worked on many civil rights cases and once prosecuted the Ku Klux Klan for ballot-rigging. He also played trumpet in a swing band, along with her mother, who was a vocalist. They encouraged their daughter when she started playing the piano at the age of six, and Crow went on to gain a degree in classical music from Missouri State University. She taught in elementary schools in St Louis after graduation and played in cover bands. After splitting with her boyfriend in 1986, she moved to Los Angeles with her $10,000 savings, determined to become a professional musician.
Career:
Crow worked as a session musician and collaborated with Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and George Harrison, and spent 18 months as a backing vocalist on Michael Jackson's Bad tour before winning a contract in her own right. She spent $250,000 recording an album, but wasn't happy with the results and asked her record company not to release it - they agreed. She then started work on Tuesday Night Music Club instead, which was released in 1993, but didn't make much of an impression until the following year when the record company suggested releasing the track All I Wanna Do as a single. It reached number two in the American charts and number four in Britain - the album subsequently went multi-platinum. She subsequently had hits with the songs Everyday Is a Winding Road and the Bond theme Tomorrow Never Dies. Her album, 100 Miles from Memphis, was released in 2010.
