Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939, Tina Turner has sold in excess of 100 million records and earned numerous plaudits including Grammy awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with her first husband, Ike Turner. She was the first woman to grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and dabbled in acting including a memorable performance opposite Mel Gibson in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Following a prolonged period of ill health, Turner intends to retire from the spotlight with her second husband, Erwin Bach. She bids farewell to her fans in the emotional documentary Tina. Directed by Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin, the film invites the singer to reminisce about her turbulent life and career with glowing contributions from friends, family and fans including Oprah Winfrey and Angela Bassett

Early-life: Although born in Harlem, New York on August 16, 1958, Angela Evelyn Bassett relocated to Florida as a child with her sister and social worker mother. She attended Yale University, where she graduated with a degree in African-American studies, before achieving a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1983.
Career: Following stints as a receptionist and photo researcher, Angela began looking for acting work in New York and one of her first appearances came in 1985 when she appeared in JE Franklin's Black Girl at Second Stage Theatre. In the same year, she made her TV debut as a prostitute in Doubletake and then gained recognition for her role in Boyz n the Hood. This was followed by starring roles in The Jacksons: An American Dream and What's Love Got to Do with It, for which she won a Golden Globe. She has worked steadily ever since, including roles in Alias and ER. More recently, she has appeared in Green Lantern, This Means War and Olympus Has Fallen.

Best Known For: Her chat show.
Early-life: Oprah Gail Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on January 29, 1954. She came from a poor family who couldn't buy her a pair of shoes until she was six. Incredibly bright, she learnt to read at two and a half. She lived with her grandmother until the age of six. From the age of nine she was sexually abused by male family members and friends. One attack left her pregnant at 14, but her son died after being born two months premature. She went to live with her father in Nashville, who helped get her life back on track.
Career: In 1971, while still at school, Winfrey worked part-time as an announcer at a local radio station. After graduating from Tennessee State University, she moved on to another station, then spent six years as a news anchor in Baltimore. In 1984, Winfrey took over the ailing AM Chicago show. Within a year, it was a huge success and was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show. Its massive worldwide popularity enabled her to build a media empire. Away from TV, she has also acted, most notably in The Color Purple, for which she was Oscar-nominated, Lee Daniels' The Butler and Selma. Her long-running daytime TV show ended in 2011, but she launched Oprah's Next Chapter on her own US channel a year later.
