Born: December 13, 1967 in Terrell, Texas
Best Known For: The films Collateral and Ray.
Early-life: Born Eric Marlon Bishop on December 13, 1967, in Terrell, Texas. His parents' marriage broke up and he was adopted by his grandparents when he was seven months old. He was raised in a strict household, was a member of the church choir and scouts, and had piano lessons from the age of five. He went on to win a classical piano scholarship at the International University in San Diego.
Career: Encouraged by a girlfriend, he made his stage debut as a stand-up comic in 1989. Foxx changed his name to something androgynous after learning that women were first on the bill at open-mic nights in comedy clubs. By 1991 he was a star in the US thanks to TV show In Living Color. His first film was 1992's Toys. Since then he's had his own, self-titled show, and featured in movies The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Any Given Sunday, Ali and Collateral. His leading role in Ray Charles biopic Ray propelled him onto Hollywood's A-list. He's also released several albums, and collaborated with Kanye West on hit single Gold Digger.
Quote: 'When a project becomes magic and special it means that at certain points in the script it parallels your story.'
Trivia: He took his surname from one of his favourite comedians, Redd Foxx, is a big fan of wrestling and won a grand total of 22 awards for his performance in Ray, including an Oscar.

Born: March 27, 1970 in New York
Best Known For: Her topsy-turvy singing career.
Early-life: Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970, in Huntington, New York, the daughter of an opera singer-turned-vocal coach and an engineer. She was named after the Lerner and Loewe song They Call the Wind Mariah from the musical Paint Your Wagon. Her parents split when she was three and her mother coached her singing at home. She attended Greenlawn's Harborfields High School, after which she swept hair in a salon and was fired from several waitressing jobs. Her five-octave vocal range landed her a job as a backing singer for Brenda K Starr.
Career: Sony Music boss Tommy Mottola signed Carey immediately after hearing her demo tape. Her debut 1990 album caused a stir thanks to her versatility. It sold six million copies and won a Grammy. Her 1991 follow-up, Emotions, proved just as successful, as did her next four albums. It appeared the bubble burst in 2001 when her contract was scrapped following her flop film Glitter and its accompanying album and she was reportedly hospitalised following an emotional breakdown. However, she made a triumphant comeback with the Grammy-winning album The Emancipation of Mimi in 2005 and has spent more time at number one in the American singles charts than the Beatles. She was nominated for a number of awards for her acting role in the 2009 film Precious and in 2012 joined the judging panel of American Idol.
Quote: 'What's weird is being on stage, and the love that you get, and the adoration that you feel from your real fans. It's hard for a partner to compete - just imagine.'
Trivia: The only female artist to have 18 #1 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts.
Dionne Warwick (Contributor)
Born: December 12, 1940 in New Jersey
Best Known For: Being Whitney Houston's cousin.
Early-life: Born Marie Dionne Warrick on December 12, 1940, in New Jersey to parents Mancel and Lee, both of whom had interests in the music business. Dionne started singing from a young age, and formed a band with her sister, Delia (Dee Dee), who died in 2008. They were spotted backstage at New York City's Apollo Theatre by a man looking for backing singers for Sam 'The Man' Taylor. During one recording session, Dionne's vocals captured the imagination of songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Together, they signed to Scepter Records in 1962.
Career: Warwick released her first solo single in November 1962 - and hasn't looked back since. Hits such as Walk On By, Do You Know the Way to San Jose and Anyone Who Had a Heart established her as a star on both sides of the Atlantic. In the early years of the 1970s, Bacharach and David parted company with Warwick, and although her career faltered after this period, she continued to record. She scored hits in the 1980s and subsequent years, and also branched out into TV, hosting her own show. She also wrote her first book, My Point of View, in 2003.
Quote: 'The male ego is a fragile thing. It's hard when the woman is the breadwinner. All my life, the only man who ever took care of me financially was my father.'
Trivia: Away from music, she has developed her own brand of cosmetics. In 2011, she appeared in the American version of Celebrity Apprentice.
