Early-life:
Born Marie Dionne Warrick on December 12, 1940, in New Jersey to parents Mancel and Lee, both of whom had interests in the music business. Dionne started singing from a young age, and formed a band with her sister, Delia (Dee Dee), who died in 2008. They were spotted backstage at New York City's Apollo Theatre by a man looking for backing singers for Sam 'The Man' Taylor. During one recording session, Dionne's vocals captured the imagination of songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Together, they signed to Scepter Records in 1962.
Career:
Warwick released her first solo single in November 1962 - and hasn't looked back since. Hits such as Walk On By, Do You Know the Way to San Jose and Anyone Who Had a Heart established her as a star on both sides of the Atlantic. In the early years of the 1970s, Bacharach and David parted company with Warwick, and although her career faltered after this period, she continued to record. She scored hits in the 1980s and subsequent years, and also branched out into TV, hosting her own show. She also wrote her first book, My Point of View, in 2003.
Quote:
'The male ego is a fragile thing. It's hard when the woman is the breadwinner. All my life, the only man who ever took care of me financially was my father.'
Trivia:
Away from music, she has developed her own brand of cosmetics. In 2011, she appeared in the American version of Celebrity Apprentice.
