Billy Connolly (Actor) .. Nickie Dryden
Born: November 24, 1942 in Anderston, Glasgow
Best Known For: Making the world laugh.
Early-life: William Connolly Jr was born on November 24, 1942, in Anderston, Glasgow. His parents separated four years later, and Billy and his sister Florence were brought up by his father's sisters. It was an unhappy childhood, and it was revealed in a biography by his wife, Pamela Stephenson, that he was sexually abused by his father. He left school at 15 and took several odd jobs before becoming a welder at a Glasgow shipyard.
Career: Connolly bought a banjo and formed a folk group, the Humblebums, which also included future music star Gerry Rafferty. Their success enabled him to quit his day job. Tours, a Royal Command Performance and two albums followed. The band split when Connolly's jokes between songs started taking over the act and he set out on his own in 1971. By 1975, when he first appeared on the Michael Parkinson chat show, he was a household name. Since then, he's gained fans across the globe thanks to a number of successful stand-up tours. Away from comedy, he's written plays and acted, appearing in numerous films including Mrs Brown, Still Crazy, Quartet and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. He has also fronted a number of TV travelogues, such as World Tour of Scotland, Billy Connolly's World Tour of Australia, and Billy Connolly's Route 66. In 2013, he was successfully treated for prostate cancer and was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
Quote: 'Life for me is great. I'm a very wealthy person, I'm married to a very beautiful woman and I get laid with monotonous regularity.'
Trivia: Connolly voiced King Fergus in Pixar's animated movie Brave (2012).
Ken Stott (Actor) .. Gary Keltie
Francesca Annis (Actor) .. Val Dryden
Born: May 14, 1945 in London
Best Known For: Being Ralph Fiennes' former other half.
Early-life: Born in 1944 in Brazil, where her parents, singer Marquita and actor Anthony owned a nightclub. The family moved back to Britain when she was seven. Her convent education led to Francesca considering a life as a nun, but a talent scout spotted her during a school production and cast her in a play for the BBC. However, her big break came when she was given a role in the Elizabeth Taylor vehicle Cleopatra.
Career: Annis has worked extensively on the big and small screen, as well as the stage; one of her earliest big screen appearances came courtesy of a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role in Carry on Teacher way back in 1959. Her TV credits include the series Lillie, The Gravy Train Goes East, Dalziel and Pascoe, Reckless, Cranford, and Wives and Daughters _ for which she received a Best Actress Bafta nomination. She has featured in films such as Roman Polanski's Macbeth (which featured her reciting the sleepwalking soliloquy in the nude), Dune, Milk, and Revolver. In the theatre, she has gained critical acclaim for productions such as The Vortex, Blood and Shoreditch Madonna.
Quote: 'Eat well and sleep well. That will feed your nervous system and your psyche. As you get older, you look how you feel.'
Trivia: She was actor Ralph Fiennes' partner for 11 years and has three children from her previous relationship with actor Patrick Wiseman.
Iain Robertson (Actor) .. Flipper
Annette Crosbie (Actor) .. Lana
Born: February 12, 1934 in Gorebridge, near Edinburgh
Best Known For: Playing Victor Meldrew's wife in One Foot in the Grave.
Early-life: Born on February 12, 1934, in Gorebridge, outside Edinburgh. Her parents were strict Calvinists and did not believe in lavishing affection on their only child. She had little self-confidence and as a youngster her only friend was a Staffordshire bull terrier called Dougal. Her mother was a talented musician and wanted Crosbie to be a music teacher, but she became an actress against both her parents' wishes. 'You'd have thought I'd announced I wanted to go on the streets,' she remarks about their reaction to her career choice.
Career: After gaining experience with various repertory companies, Crosbie left Scotland at the age of 17 for a scholarship at the Bristol Old Vic theatre school. On graduating, she worked in London's West End. Her film debut came in 1959's The Bridal Path. She later had acclaimed TV roles in The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Edward the King. More recently she has starred in One Foot in the Grave, Doctor Finlay, An Unsuitable Job for a Woman, Calendar Girls, Quite Ugly One Morning, New Tricks, Doctor Who and Little Dorrit.
Quote: 'You don't really want to know about me. My dogs are far more interesting.'
Trivia: Crosbie was awarded an OBE in 1998 and works tirelessly for animal rights.
