Early-life:
Derek was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on April 24, 1974 to pianist Marjorie Dixon and former actor Maurice Luke. Derek knew he wanted to be an actor from an early age. He moved to California in 1995 and made ends meet by working at the retail store on the Sony Pictures Studios lot.
Career:
Luke was still working at the Sony store when he landed the title role in Antwone Fisher (2002) alongside Denzel Washington in Washington's directorial debut. Since then, he has starred in Pieces of April (2003), Glory Road (2006), Catch a Fire (2006), Spike Lee's Miracle at St Anna (2008), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Baggage Claim (2013). His TV credits include Trauma, Hawthorne, CSI and The Americans.
