Early-life: Patrick Wayne Swayze was born in Houston, Texas, on August 18, 1952, to Jesse and Patsy Swayze. He had a younger brother, Don. A naturally gifted dancer, Patrick studied at Harkness Ballet School, the Joffrey Ballet School, and San Jacinto College. His first professional performance was as a dancer in Disney on Parade. Its success brought him to the attention of other directors. In 1987 he became an overnight global sensation thanks to Dirty Dancing. His last films included Donnie Darko, Waking Up in Reno, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Keeping Mum, and Powder Blue. Swayze was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in January 2008.
