Born: April 28, 1978 in Sunderland
Best Known For: The Culture Show and 10 O'Clock Live.
Early-life: Born Lauren Cecilia Gofton on April 28, 1978, in Sunderland, and grew up in a middle-class suburb. Both her parents worked in education, and she and brother Pete were encouraged to explore their creative talents. She was about to begin a degree course in medieval studies when her rock band Kenickie, named after one of the characters in Grease, found favour with John Peel. He played their songs on his radio show, they won a record contract and achieved four Top 40 hits and a successful album.
Career: Since Kenickie's demise in 1998, Laverne has worked on solo material and as a TV presenter. She's appeared on programmes such as Never Mind The Buzzcocks, the BBC's coverage of Glastonbury, Channel 4's RI:SE and the MTV show Videoclash, and worked with the Divine Comedy on their 2004 single Come Home Billy Bird. She has presented shows on Radio 1, Xfm London, Radio 6 Music and Radio 2, and co-hosted BBC Two's The Culture Show since 2006. She was one of the hosts of 10 O'Clock Live on Channel 4 between 2011 and 2013.
Quote: "Being on the telly and the radio is a lot easier than going round the country playing gigs."
Trivia: She played a zombie in cult 2004 movie Shaun of the Dead.
Rod Stewart (Performer)
Born: January 10, 1945 in Highgate, London
Best Known For: His Lothario ways.
Early-life: Born Roderick David Stewart on January 10, 1945, in Highgate, London, the youngest of Robert and Elsie Stewart's five children. Not keen on school, he preferred his electric train set. At 12 his father gave him a guitar for Christmas. Inspired by the music of Al Jolson and Lonnie Donegan, he taught himself to play. Fiercely proud of his Scottish heritage, he hoped to play football for the national team and flirted with a professional career, signing for Brentford at 16. He later quit to concentrate on music.
Career: Stewart played in various groups before joining the Faces in 1969. He also began a solo career, and his popularity helped the band in the USA. Maggie May was a number one hit in 1971, and he left the Faces to go solo in 1975. Stewart moved to the US for tax purposes, and released numerous well-received albums featuring hits such as Lady Jane and Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? His career dipped in the mid-1980s, but he came back with Grammy-nominated song Downtown Train. Most recently, musical Tonight's The Night, featuring his songs, has become a West End hit. He's also released albums featuring classic American songs.
Quote: "Instead of getting married again, I'm going to find a woman I don't like and just give her a house."
Trivia: He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
