Bear Grylls (Presenter)
Born: June 07, 1974 in Isle of Wight
Best Known For: His survival series.
Early-life: Born Edward Michael Bear Grylls on June 7, 1974, in Donaghee, Northern Ireland. He's the son of Michael Grylls, a former Conservative MP, and his wife Sally. Bear has a sister called Lara. He first began climbing with his father on the Isle of Wight, where he grew up. After leaving school, he joined the Army, and spent three years with the SAS, during which time he broke his back in three places while freefall parachuting in South Africa.
Career: On leaving the Army in 1997, Grylls reached the summit of Ama Dablam in the Himalayas, a peak Sir Edmund Hilary described as 'unclimbable'. He was the youngest British person to complete that feat, and also to climb Mount Everest and return alive. In 2000 he led the first team to circumnavigate the UK on personal watercraft. Five years later he headed another team which became the first to paramotor over the jungle plateau of the Angel Falls in Venezuela. In 2005, he hosted the highest-ever dinner party, which saw guests sat round a table slung under a hot air balloon. Grylls has written several best-selling books about his adventures and hosted such programmes as Escape to the Legion and Born Survivor, which has become a global smash.
Quote: 'My late dad used to say two things mattered in life — follow your dreams, and look after your friends. I've always tried to do that.'
Trivia: Grylls became the Chief Scout in 2009.
