Early-life: Ryan Thomas Gosling was born in London, Ontario, on November 12, 1980, the son of Thomas Ray, a travelling salesman, and Donna, a high school teacher. His parents divorced when he was a child and he and his sister, Mandi, lived with their mother. From an early age, Ryan and his sister sang together at weddings and he was involved in a local ballet company. At the age of 12, he moved to Orlando after successfully auditioning for a role as a mouseketeer in Disney Channel's Mickey Mouse Club. Fellow cast members included Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Career: In 1995, Gosling returned to Canada and appeared in family TV series including Are You Afraid of the Dark, Goosebumps and Breaker High. At the age of 18, he moved to New Zealand to film adventure series Young Hercules. He made his film debut in Remember the Titans (2000) and secured his first lead role in The Believer (2001). His first taste of mainstream success was in The Notebook (2004). In a career that has seen him star in a number of box-office failures, he has had success with Blue Valentine (2010), Drive (2011), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), The Ides of March (2011), The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) and Gangster Squad (2013).

Trivia: Away from acting, Gosling has continued to perform as a singer. In 2007, with his friend Zach Shields, he formed indie rock band Dead Man's Bones. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Half Nelson (2006), a film that only cost $700,000 to make.

Early-life: Rachel Anne McAdams was born in London, Ontario, on November 17, 1978. She is the eldest of three children. She began figure skating at the age of four and competed in the sport until she was 18. She attended Disney and Shakespeare summer camps as a child and from the age of 12, appeared in Original Kids Theatre Company productions. After being persuaded by her English teacher to consider a career in acting, she enrolled on a four-year theatre programme at York University in Toronto. While at university, Rachel worked with the Necessary Angel Theatre Company.
Career: In 2001, McAdams shot an MTV pilot called Shotgun Love Dolls and in the same year, she made her film debut in My Name is Tanino. She received a Genie Award nomination in Canada for her role in Perfect Pie (2002). Her first Hollywood movie was The Hot Chick (2002), and her big break came in 2004 when she starred opposite Lindsay Lohan in teen comedy Mean Girls. Since then, McAdams has appeared in The Notebook (2004), Wedding Crashers (2005), State of Play (2009), Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), Morning Glory (2010), Midnight in Paris (2011) and About Time (2013).

Best Known For: Maverick and The Rockford Files.
Early-life: James Scott Bumgarner was born in Norman, Oklahoma on April 7, 1928 to Mildred and Weldon. He had two older brothers, Jack and Charles. At the age of 16, James joined the United States Merchant Marine near the end of the Second World War. A year later, he joined his father in Los Angeles and enrolled at Hollywood High School. He went on to spend seven months serving in the National Guard and then went to Korea for 14 months in the Regular Army. His first taste of acting came in 1954 when he landed a non-speaking role in the Broadway production of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial.
Career: Garner quickly moved into TV and got his big break playing the role of professional gambler Bret Maverick in the comedy Western series Maverick, a role he played from 1957 to 1960. Film roles followed in The Thrill of it All (1963), The Great Escape (1963), The Americanization of Emily (1964) and Hour of the Gun (1967). In the 1970s, Garner returned to TV and appeared as private investigator Jim Rockford in the hugely popular The Rockford Files. He played the role for six seasons and was rewarded with an Emmy Award for Best Actor in 1977. He received an Oscar nomination for his role in Murphy's Romance (1985). In the 1990s, he reprised his role as Jim Rockford in eight TV movies. In his later years, Garner starred in My Fellow Americans (1996), Space Cowboys (2000) and The Notebook (2004) and TV sitcom 8 Simple Rules. He died of natural causes on July 19, 2014, at the age of 86.

Early-life: James Paul Marsden was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on September 18, 1973. His parents divorced when he was nine. He has two sisters and two brothers. He studied broadcast journalism at Oklahoma State University for one and a half years before dropping out to move to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.
Career: Marsden's first acting job was in the pilot episode of sitcom The Nanny in 1993. A year later, he starred in Canadian TV series Boogies Diner. His big break came in 1996 when he landed the lead role in ABC drama Second Noah. He went on to star in the films Disturbing Behaviour (1998) and Gossip (2000) and joined the cast of TV comedy drama Ally McBeal in its final season. Since then he has filled out his CV by playing Cyclops in three hugely popular X-Men movies and starring in Superman Returns (2006), Hairspray (2007), Enchanted (2007), 27 Dresses (2008), Death at a Funeral (2010), Bachelorette (2012) and 2 Guns (2013). He also had a recurring role in sitcom 30 Rock.

Early-life: Joan was born in Rochelle, Illinois on August 20, 1956 to Dorothea and James. She has an older brother, David, and two older sisters, Mary and Lynn. Joan attended Eastern Illinois University and Northern Illinois University and she became a member of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1977.
Career: Allen's early film credits include Compromising Positions (1985) and Manhunter (1986). In 1988, she won a Tony Award for her performance on Broadway in Burn This. On the big screen, she has received Oscar nominations for Nixon (1995), The Crucible (1996) and The Contender (2000). Her other film credits include The Ice Storm (1997), Face/Off (1997), Pleasantville (1998), The Contender (2000), The Notebook (2004), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and The Bourne Legacy (2012). She also starred in short-lived TV series Luck.
