Early-life: Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in New York on July 3, 1962. His mother was a teacher, his father, whom Cruise later described as 'abusive', was an electrical engineer. He has three sisters. Cruise spent part of his childhood in Canada before returning to the US after his parents separated. While at high school, Tom caught the acting bug and abandoned his plans to enter the priesthood. At the age of 18, he returned to New York, where he landed his first film role in Endless Love.
Career: Within five years of his big-screen debut, Cruise was one of the hottest actors of his generation, having starred in the likes of Risky Business and Top Gun. The likes of Rain Man, The Color of Money, Interview with the Vampire and Days of Thunder followed. He has also turned his hand to producing and made the smart move of taking a share of several of his film's profits, making him one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. Early-life: Miranda was born in Brisbane on December 16, 1967 to actors Barry and Lindsay Otto. Her sister, Gracie Otto, is also an actor. At a young age, Miranda appeared in plays at the Nimrod Theatre. She made her film debut at the age of 18 in Emma's War (1986). Minor film roles followed in Initiation (1987) and The 13th Floor (1988). She went on to graduate from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney in 1990.
Career: Otto's big break came in the movie The Girl Who Came Late (1991). It earned her first Australian Film Institute nomination. She was nominated again the following year for her performance in The Last Days of Chez Nous (1992). Roles followed in Love Serenade (1996), The Well (1997), Doing Time for Patsy Cline (1997) and In the Winter Dark (1998). Her profile increased globally in 2000 when she starred opposite Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer in What Lies Beneath. She played Eowyn in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Early-life: Hannah Dakota Fanning was born in Conyers, Georgia, on February 23, 1994 to former tennis professional Heather Joy Arrington and former minor league baseball player Steven J Fanning. Her sister, Elle, is also an actress. Dakota was only a small child when she began acting in plays at the Towne Lake Arts Center in Woodstock, Georgia. Her first professional job was a guest role in an episode of ER in 2000.
Career: Further guest appearances followed in a number of TV shows, including Ally McBeal, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Practice, Spin City and Malcolm in the Middle. She was still only seven when she starred opposite Sean Penn in the movie I Am Sam (2001), a role that earned her a Screen Actors Guild nomination. A year later, she played the lead child role in Steven Spielberg miniseries Taken. Early-life: Timothy Francis Robbins was born in West Covina, California, on October 16, 1958. He has a brother and two sisters. The son of a folk singer and an actress, Tim was interested in politics and theatre at a young age, and at 12 was already a member of the Theatre for the New City, an avant-garde acting troupe. He studied drama at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), graduating in 1981, the same year he founded The Actors' Gang, which specialised in radical political observations.
Career: Robbins began appearing in films and on TV in the early 1980s before hitting the big time in 1988 baseball movie Bull Durham. He had a successful streak in the early 90s thanks to such films as The Player, Short Cuts, Pret-a-Porter, The Shawshank Redemption and Arlington Road. He's also a talented director, with Bob Roberts and Dead Man Walking among his credits. He won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for Mystic River - at 6ft 5 he is the tallest-ever winner of an acting Oscar. His more recent work includes Green Lantern, TV movie Cinema Verite, Thanks for Sharing and Life of Crime.

Early-life: Steven Allan Spielberg was born on December 18, 1946, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Father Arnold and mum Leah split when he was young. Inspired by old war films, he made the drama Escape to Nowhere when he was 13. That won him the first of many awards. He dropped out of university but his early offerings, Firelight and Amblin, garnered much acclaim. He then landed a job at Universal Studios, where he directed TV movies.
Career: Spielberg's 1971 thriller Duel paved the way for feature film The Sugarland Express, a modest hit. In 1975, Jaws started a long run of successes, including the Indiana Jones films, ET, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. He also co-founded studio Dreamworks SKG, which has backed various hits, including Shrek, American Beauty and Gladiator. Spielberg's recent films include The Terminal, Munich and War of the Worlds. He has also worked as the producer on a string of hit films, including The Goonies, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the Back to the Future trilogy, the Transformers trilogy, and True Grit. His recent work includes The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, War Horse and Lincoln. He won an Oscar for Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List and an honorary award in 1987.
