Born: September 25, 1951 in Oakland, California
Best Known For: Being Luke Skywalker.
Early-life: Born Mark Richard Hamill in Oakland, California, on September 25, 1951, to US Navy captain William and his wife Virginia. He has four sisters and two brothers. His father's career meant that the family moved around a lot. As a consequence, Mark spent periods of his childhood in California, Virginia, New York and Japan. He later studied drama at Los Angeles City College and made his acting debut in 1970 in an episode of The Bill Cosby Show.
Career: In the early 1970s, Hamill had a recurring role on General Hospital and guest starred in a number of TV shows, including The Partridge Family, Cannon and The Manhunter. During this time, he was also picking up work as a voice actor. His big break came in 1977 when his friend, Robert Englund, suggested he should audition for the role of Luke Skywalker in a forthcoming film called Star Wars - and the rest is history. He reprised the role in equally successful sequels. In more recent years, he has been better known as a voice actor, most notably bringing Batman's nemesis the Joker to life in video games and animated series. In 2014, he returned to the Star Wars universe with members of the original cast when he began filming Star Wars: Episode VII.
Quote: "I can't tell you how much we laughed on the set to have Alec Guinness in a scene with a big, furry dog that's flying a spaceship."
Trivia: Towards the end of shooting the first Star Wars movie, Hamill was injured in a car accident and required seven hours of surgery to his face. As a result, a double had to be used in certain scenes.
