Best Known For:
Being part of 1970s comedy trio The Goodies, and latterly as a TV naturalist.
Early-life:
Born William Edgar Oddie in Rochdale, Lancashire, on July 7, 1941. He had a troubled childhood as his mother suffered from mental illness. His parents separated when he was young, and he was brought up by his father and grandmother in Birmingham. He developed a passion for bird-watching when he was seven. He read English at Cambridge, and developed a taste for performing in the famous Footlights entertainment troupe.
Career:
Oddie played the hairy, belligerent member of The Goodies satirical trio. Their series lasted 11 years and became a children's favourite, even though it was aimed at adults. It gave him a reputation as a leading writer, performer of comedy, and successful songwriter. He is now better known as a wildlife presenter, specialising in birds, and has featured in numerous self-titled programmes, such as Oddie in Paradise, Birding with Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie Goes Wild, and Britain Goes Wild with Bill Oddie. He appeared on Who Do You Think You Are? in which he discovered he had a sister he'd never met. He also fronted the UKTV History series My Famous Family and the BBC's Springwatch.
Quote:
"Birding often gets saddled with the image of 'twitchers' - obsessives in anoraks, with nothing else in their lives. But, for me, one of the attractions is that it can be truly therapeutic."
Trivia:
Away from TV, Oddie's an avid football fan, supporting both Ipswich Town and Rochdale.
