Rob Brydon (Host)

Born: May 03, 1965 in Swansea

Best Known For: His chat show and Gavin & Stacey.

Early-life: Born Robert Brydon Jones in Swansea, South Wales, on May 3, 1965. His early years were spent in Baglan near Port Talbot before he and his family moved to Porthcawl. He attended two secondary schools, one alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, the other with Ruth Jones. Under the guidance of his drama teacher at the local comprehensive school, his interest in acting grew, leading to him attending The Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. During the second year of his course, he quit to work for BBC Wales and enjoyed six years of presenting work on local TV and radio stations.

Career: While still presenting, Brydon ventured into comedy, and made ends meet by providing voices for adverts and animations. A small role in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels inspired him to make a short film of his comic characters; series of Marion & Geoff, A Small Summer Party and The Keith Barret Show followed. Other credits include Director's Commentary, Human Remains, Supernova, A Cock and Bull Story, Little Britain, Annually Retentive and Gavin & Stacey. He's also hosted his own BBC chat show and has chaired the comedy panel show Would I Lie to You? since 2009. In 2010, he starred alongside Steve Coogan in the partially improvised BBC Two sitcom The Trip and has since appeared in its follow-up.

Quote: 'I was always very good with girls, I could talk to them no problem at all. But I could never close the deal. You need Dutch courage to do that, to kiss them.'

Trivia: He released an autobiography, Small Man in a Book, in 2011.

David Mitchell (Team captain)

Born: July 14, 1974 in Salisbury

Best Known For: Being one half of hysterical duo Mitchell and Webb.

Early-life: Born David James Stuart Mitchell in Salisbury on July 14, 1974. He has a younger brother called Daniel. His parents were hotel managers who later moved to Oxford, where they became lecturers in hotel management. He claims he always wanted to be an actor or comedian, but told people he planned to become a barrister to please his parents. In 1993 David went to Peterhouse College, Cambridge, to study history. He performed with the famous Cambridge Footlights, eventually becoming the society president. It was in his first year at university that he met Robert Webb at an audition for a student pantomime production of Cinderella.

Career: After graduating, Mitchell worked an usher at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith. He and Webb took a number of shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before being asked to write for Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller and for surreal comedy series Big Train. In 2001, they made their first sketch show, The Mitchell and Webb Situation, which ran for six episodes on the now-defunct cable channel Play UK. Their next project came in 2003, with the award-winning Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show. They've also worked together on That Mitchell and Webb Sound, That Mitchell and Webb Look and the film Magicians. Solo, Mitchell has appeared on 10 O'Clock Live and numerous panel shows, including Would I Lie to You?, where he's a regular team captain. His autobiography, Back Story: A Memoir, was published in 2012.

Quote: 'I think, fundamentally, the people I want to make laugh are British. I can't ever imagine living abroad.'

Lee Mack (Team captain)

Born: August 04, 1968 in Southport

Best Known For: His role as namesake Lee in BBC comedy Not Going Out.

Early-life: Born Lee Gordon McKillop in Southport, Manchester. He lived with his parents above a pub before their divorce and he relocated to Blackburn. He left school at sixteen and worked as a stable boy and a bingo caller before his talent for performing was realised. He joined Pontin's as a Bluecoat but was sacked for shouting profanities at the audience and going on stage drunk. He entered an open-mike competition in 1994 and his talent was so obvious that he was to become a full-time comic within 18 months.

Career: His success as a stand-up was crowned when he won an award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He came to the attention of TV bosses after a stint on the radio. Lee was cast in The Sketch show alongside long-term collaborator Tim Vine. After a short-lived stint presenting They Think It's All Over, Mack and Vine began work on Not Going Out. The series revolves around two friends with opposite backgrounds and personalities, much like the two comics themselves. Mack has recently become a regular on comedy panel shows such as Would I Lie to You? and Have I Got News for You. He also has sell-out tours and best-selling DVDs to his name.

Quote: 'I'm not as bothered about being as cool as I was 10 years ago. I quite like the idea of being phenomenally uncool.'

Trivia: In June 2012, Mack was one of the comperes at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert outside Buckingham Palace.

Clare Balding (Panellist)

Born: January 29, 1971 in Kingsclere, Hampshire

Best Known For: Fronting the BBC's horse-racing coverage

Early-life: Clare Victoria Balding was born in Kingsclere, Hampshire, on January 29, 1971. Her father Ian and uncles Toby and William were horse trainers whose love of the sport was passed on to the young rider. She was a leading amateur flat jockey in 1989 and 1990, the same year which saw her crowned as Champion Lady Rider. She left the saddle behind in 1991 to study English at Cambridge, and in 1993 landed her first job in entertainment, presenting the racing bulletin on BBC Radio Five's Danny Baker's Morning Edition.

Career: From there, she progressed to the revamped Radio Five Live, joining the station at its launch in 1994. In that summer, thanks to a recommendation from commentator Julian Wilson, Clare made her TV debut at Royal Ascot, eventually taking over full-time in 1997 alongside former jockey Willie Carson. Since then, she's been a regular on the small screen presenting a wide range of sports, including Wimbledon, the Olympics, and rugby league. She's also branched out into non-sport programmes with the likes of Crufts, Have I Got News For You and Call My Bluff. She's a prolific radio presenter and in 2012 published her autobiography, entitled My Animals and Other Family.

Quote: On moving to London: 'I missed the countryside, the village shop where people looked me in the eye and said hello.'

Trivia: She received an OBE in 2013 for services to broadcasting and journalism.

Best Known For: Acerbic gags about men.

Early-life: Born Josephine Grace Brand in Wandsworth, London, on July 23, 1957. She grew up in a village near Tunbridge Wells. Her father was a civil engineer and her mother a social worker. She has a brother called Matt. Jo was heading for Oxbridge, but rebelled and left home at 16 for a boyfriend her parents didn't approve of. When the relationship broke up, she trained as a nurse. Her first job was in a Dr Barnardo's home, but she ended up working in psychiatric units in London hospitals.

Career: Brand's sense of humour kept her going while dealing with difficult cases at work. She began doing stand-up at London clubs in the mid-1980s and eventually gave up nursing to concentrate on comedy. She was shortlisted for the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival before landing her own comedy show, Jo Brand Through the Cakehole. Since then she has regularly appeared on TV, including as a frequent guest on Have I Got News for You, Question Time and QI. She continues to do stand-up, performing at venues around the country. Brand also took part in Celebrity Fame Academy, and the reality shows Play It Again and Comic Relief Does The Apprentice. She enjoyed a bona fide hit as an actress and writer with dark medical comedy Getting On. She is a judge on ITV reality series Splash!

Best Known For: The Inbetweeners, Man Down and his stand-up tours.

Early-life: Greg was born in St Asaph, Wales, on May 14, 1968 but his parents moved to Wem in Shropshire soon after his birth. Before embarking on a career in showbiz, Greg taught drama and English for 13 years at Sandhurst School in Berkshire and Orleans Park School in Twickenham.

Career: Davies started to get noticed for his comedy as one third of sketch comedy group We Are Klang. His big break came in 2008 when he began playing schoolteacher Mr Gilbert in E4's hugely popular sitcom The Inbetweeners. In 2010, Davies's debut solo stand-up show, Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog, was nominated for the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award, which led to a sell-out nationwide tour. His second solo tour, The Back of My Mum's Head, was another sell-out national tour. He plays the lead role in popular Channel 4 sitcom Man Down, a series he also co-writes.

Quote: 'I think people find this schoolteacher thing hilarious,' he says, 'I always get asked if I was actually any good. Well, how do I answer that?'

Trivia: At 6ft 8, it is difficult for Davies to blend into a crowd.

Born: December 17, 1985 in Bishop's Stortford

Best Known For: His work on Radio 1.

Early-life: Greg was born in Bishop's Stortford on December 17, 1985. He went on to study drama at the University of East Anglia and during his time there, he presented several shows on the students' union radio station, becoming the station manager in 2006.

Career: James' big break came in October 2007 when he began presenting the Radio 1 Early Breakfast show. Since 2012, he has presented Radio 1's 4-7pm slot. He also co-hosts Not Just Cricket and Fighting Talk on Radio 5 Live. On TV, James has presented Britain Unzipped and I Survived a Zombie Apocalypse, and co-hosted coverage of various music festivals.

Quote: 'I would never be put off by anyone's level of fame. I don't hide from the showbiz world, I've just worked out what I like.'

Trivia: In 2014, James won a Gold Radio Academy Award. In 2013, he journeyed along the Zambezi River for five days to raise money for Comic Relief. He is an ambassador for the Stroke Association and the Lord's Taverners.

Best Known For: Being the glamorous face of sport.

Early-life: Born Gabrielle Nicole Yorath on April 24, 1973, to former Leeds United and Welsh international footballer Terry. The family moved around a lot when she was younger due to her father's job. Although Gabby initially dreamed of being a tennis player, she decided to concentrate on gymnastics from the age of 10, and took part in the Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990. However, she was eventually forced to quit the sport due to back problems. She studied law at Durham University, but at the same time worked in radio and wrote for magazines.

Career: After graduating, Gabby worked for a series of local radio stations before landing a job at Sky Sports in 1996. She covered a variety of events before she was head-hunted by ITV two years later to front the programme On the Ball. She became a regular fixture on the ITV sporting schedule, and was part of the team responsible for covering the 2002 World Cup. While at ITV she also hosted game show The Vault. She moved to the BBC in 2007, where she is one of the channel's senior sports presenters. She also hosts Splash! and Flockstars on ITV.

Quote: 'If you come across as someone who is knowledgeable and passionate then the fans will respect you.'

Trivia: Gabby took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2007 and she was eliminated in the fourth week.

Best Known For: Being Ricky Gervais' best friend, and sending Karl Pilkington around the world.

Early-life: Merchant was born in Bristol and attended Hanham High School. He graduated from University of Warwick with a first-class degree in Film and Literature.

Career: Before Merchant met Gervais, he was performing stand-up comedy. The pair worked together at London radio station XFM. Later, Merchant worked on a production course at the BBC, in which he enlisted Gervais' help for a short film called 'Seedy Boss' - which is when the idea of The Office arose, with both writing and directing the series. While The Office then enjoyed success Stateside, Gervais and Merchant also concentrated on BBC sitcom Extras. Then came Merchant's radio show for BBC 6 Music, The Steve Show. The comic is in the midst of nationwide tour of the UK, with a stop in New York, and continues to show up in movies and TV shows, including vehicles like An Idiot Abroad and Life's Too Short.

Quote: 'Ricky's quite happy to provoke opinion, to blur the line between his acting and his stand-up persona. He likes to be a little bit provocative. He takes pleasure from that and he's good at it, and to him it feels challenging. It feels important. That doesn't concern me.'

Best Known For: Co-presenting Robot Wars.

Early-life: Angela Marie Scanlon was born on December 29, 1983 in Ratoath, County Meath, Ireland. She went to school in Dunshaughlin, Meath before going to study business at Dublin Institute of Technology.

Career: Before moving into television, Scanlon worked as a stylist and journalist for the likes of Tatler, Grazia, Company and the Sunday Times Style magazine. She later worked on TV fashion shows Xpose and Off the Rails for RTE and weekend morning show Sunday Brunch for Channel 4. Her first documentary, Oi Ginger!, was broadcast in 2014 and was followed up by her series, Angela Scanlon: Full Frontal. In 2016, she joined The One Show as a reporter and also filled in as a presenter for Alex Jones. In the same year, Scanlon began co-hosting Robot Wars with Dara O Brian on BBC Two. She also presented TV series Angela Scanlon's Close Encounters! and documentary Trump's Unlikely Superfans on BBC Three. Since then, she has been presenting The One Show in the absence of Alex Jones.

Trivia: She was a dancer with the O'Shea Irish Dance Company in 2001.

John Simm (Panellist)

Born: July 10, 1970 in Leeds

Best Known For: Playing Sam Tyler in Life on Mars

Early-life: Born John Ronald Simm on July 10, 1970, in Leeds. He was raised in Nelson, Lancashire, and attended Edge End High School. He's the eldest of three children. His father Ronald, a local musician, taught him how to play the guitar and together they toured the region's working men's clubs. In 1986, aged 16, John enrolled at Blackpool Drama College, and two years later moved to London to study Stanislavsky's acting methods at London's Drama Centre.

Career: Simm made his TV debut in a 1992 episode of Rumpole of the Bailey. He also appeared in Heartbeat, TV movie Meat, Dalziel and Pascoe's first drama A Pinch of Snuff, Cracker and the film Boston Kickout. Simm became a familiar face thanks to acclaimed series The Lakes. He went on to appear in such projects as Human Traffic, 24 Hour Party People, Spaced, White Teeth, State of Play and Sex Traffic. Simm's performance as troubled cop Sam Tyler in BBC hit Life on Mars made him a household name. Since then he's appeared in Doctor Who, Mad Dogs, The Village, Mad Dogs and Prey. While continuing his work as an actor, during the 1990s he was also a founder member of the rock band Magic Alex.

Quote: On why he chose to make Life on Mars: 'The mad twist at the start appealed to me. I thought, if I can make that believable I can make anything believable.'

Trivia: He's also played alongside his friend, Echo and the Bunnymen star Ian McCulloch, on albums and live on stage.

Ranj Singh (Panellist)

Best Known For: Being a TV medic.

Early-life: Ranjit Singh was born in Medway, Kent, in 1979. He comes from quite a traditional Indian Sikh background and says that although his parents could be strict, their main priority was ensuring that Ranj and his brothers had all the opportunities they didn't. He went on to study medicine, and initially planned to become a GP, but instead found himself drawn to paediatrics after training at a number of London hospitals.

Career: After appearing on TV as a medical expert, Ranj came up with the idea for a health show for children and pitched it to his friend and fellow choir member Simon Hickson (of one-time Saturday morning kids' TV duo Trevor and Simon), who set up a meeting for him at a production company. The result was the award-winning CBeebies show Get Well Soon, which ran for three years. Since then, Ranj has combined medicine with a media career, appearing on shows including Good Morning Britain, This Morning and Save Money: Lose Weight. In 2018, he competed on Strictly Come Dancing and was the sixth celebrity to be eliminated.

Quote: On attitudes towards his sexuality: "The media industry is much more accepting, but I feel like the medical world has a little further to go. It's a bit ironic that the caring profession could ever be prejudiced, but it does happen."

Trivia: Ranj was such a Strictly fan that he admits he'd been asking his agent to put him forward for the show for seven years before he finally got the call.

Best Known For: Strictly Come Dancing, and the BBC's flagship Film programme.

Early-life: Claudia Anne Winkleman was born in London on January 15, 1972, to former Sunday Express editor Eve Pollard and publisher Barry Winkleman. Her parents split when she was three, and subsequently remarried. Her half-sister, Sophie, is an actress, and she also has a half-brother called Nicholas. Claudia grew up in the London suburb of Hampstead and attended the City of London School for Girls before studying art history at Cambridge. She considered pursuing a career as a gallery curator, encouraged by her mother who thought the media could be tough on women, but instead ended up working on TV.

Career: Winkleman's TV career began with a job on the regional discussion programme Central Today in 1991, before graduating to Holiday on BBC One and ITV's This Morning. She worked on the infamous L!ve TV and various other digital channels before joining BBC Three's Liquid News in 2002. She also presented a Fame Academy spin-off series, and between 2004 and 2010, she presented Strictly Come Dancing's daily sister show, It Takes Two. Since then, she's fronted Art School, the Eurovision Dance Contest and part of the Sports Relief coverage, as well as her own vehicles, such as King Of. She currently co-hosts the Film programme and since 2013, she has presented The Great British Sewing Bee for BBC Two. After previously filling in as a co-host on Strictly Come Dancing when Bruce Forsyth was unavailable, she became the full-time co-host alongside Tess Daly in 2014.

Quote: On her parents: 'Nepotism is a magnificent thing. Not in the sense of 'Don't worry, love, I'll get you a job', but because they can give you advice.'

Trivia: Winkleman has lent her support to a number of charities, including Comic Relief and Refuge.

Lucy Worsley (Panellist)

Best Known For: Presenting various historical documentaries for the BBC.

Early-life: Born on December 18, 1973 in Reading, Berkshire. Lucy moved frequently as a child with her father's job as a geologist, travelling to such countries as Canada, Iceland and Norway before the family settled in Nottingham. She studied ancient and modern history at New College, which is part of Oxford University. She graduated in 1995 with a first-class. Lucy started out as a curator for Milton Manor before going on to work for English Heritage and writing the English Heritage guide to Bolsover Castle. She then worked for Glasgow Museums before becoming chief curator at Historic Royal Palaces.

Career: Worsley's earliest TV presenting roles include If Walls Could Talk and Elegance and Decadence: The Age of the Regency, which she worked on in 2011. She co-presented Antiques Uncovered with Mark Hill in 2012. Worsley's series A Very British Murder with Lucy Worsley was broadcast in 2013 and she presented The First Georgians: The German Kings Who Made Britain the year after. Since then, she has presented such series as Empire of the Tsars: Romanov Russia with Lucy Worsley, Lucy Worsley: Mozart's London Odyssey, A Very British History, Six Wives with Lucy Worsley and History's Biggest Fibs with Lucy Worsley.

Quote: 'The people who like my programmes like real ale, they like old guns and old trains, and they also like a nice dress.'

Trivia: She enjoys cross country running and represented Berkshire when she was a teenager.
