Best Known For:
Dame Edna Everage.
Early-life:
Born John Barry Humphries on February 17, 1934, in Melbourne, Australia. His father was a successful construction manager. Humphries claims that although he had everything he wanted as a child, he was often left alone, and spent much of his time playing dress-up. At school he did well in arts-based subjects, but hated maths. While at Melbourne University he joined a theatre group and became hooked on acting. On leaving, he tried his hand at numerous jobs, but decided he wanted to be professional performer.
Career:
In 1955, Humphries created Edna Everage, a plain-speaking Aussie housewife who proved popular with audiences. Shortly afterwards, he moved to London and appeared in several West End shows. His comic strip, Barry Mackenzie, was successful and was eventually turned into a movie. Since then, Edna has appeared in numerous shows, both on TV and stage, while Humphries has also devised numerous other characters, including Australian cultural attache Les Patterson (who had his own film in 1987), trade unionist Lance Boyle and grandfatherly Sandy Stone. Away from showbusiness, Humphries is an acclaimed landscape painter and has written numerous plays and novels.
Quote:
'I still seem to shock people, even though I look terribly respectable now in my old age.'
