Liz McIvor discovers how carving up the landscape in order to build canals helped further man's understanding of the earth below. William Smith, a surveyor on the Somerset Coal Canal, discovered a way of ordering layers of rocks and eventually created the first geological map of England and Wales. His ideas about the age and formation of the earth were developed long before Darwin published his theories of evolution
