Early-life:
Kenneth Arthur Dodd was born in Knotty Ash, Liverpool, on November 8, 1927. His father was a coal merchant. He was very close to his parents, especially his mother, and still lives in the house where he grew up. Dodd's famous buckteeth are believed to have been caused by hitting his mouth on the kerb after falling off his bike at the age of seven. His childhood heroes included Ted Ray, Robb Wilton, Arthur Askey and Max Miller, who inspired him to become a comedian.
Career:
Dodd developed a comedy act as 'operatic tenor and sausage knotter' Professor Yaffle Chuckabutty while working in clubs in the 1950s. In 1958, he topped the bill for the Blackpool summer season and has been a star ever since. In the 1960s and 1970s he appeared in a number of TV series including The Ken Dodd Show, Doddy's Music Box and Ken Dodd's Showbiz. He enjoyed a stint as a pop star and topped the charts in 1965 with Tears. In 1989, he was put on trial for tax evasion but was cleared of all charges. Even in his ninth decade, he continues to perform nationwide live shows which often last several hours.

Trivia:
In 2010, Eastern Airways named one of their aircraft after him. In July 2015, he added a personalised brick to the People's Path at Liverpool Cathedral. His brick reads: Ken Dodd, Happiness.
