Rod Stewart (Performer)
Born: January 10, 1945 in Highgate, London
Best Known For: His Lothario ways.
Early-life: Born Roderick David Stewart on January 10, 1945, in Highgate, London, the youngest of Robert and Elsie Stewart's five children. Not keen on school, he preferred his electric train set. At 12 his father gave him a guitar for Christmas. Inspired by the music of Al Jolson and Lonnie Donegan, he taught himself to play. Fiercely proud of his Scottish heritage, he hoped to play football for the national team and flirted with a professional career, signing for Brentford at 16. He later quit to concentrate on music.
Career: Stewart played in various groups before joining the Faces in 1969. He also began a solo career, and his popularity helped the band in the USA. Maggie May was a number one hit in 1971, and he left the Faces to go solo in 1975. Stewart moved to the US for tax purposes, and released numerous well-received albums featuring hits such as Lady Jane and Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? His career dipped in the mid-1980s, but he came back with Grammy-nominated song Downtown Train. Most recently, musical Tonight's The Night, featuring his songs, has become a West End hit. He's also released albums featuring classic American songs.
Quote: "Instead of getting married again, I'm going to find a woman I don't like and just give her a house."
Trivia: He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
