Dodd developed a comedy act as 'operatic tenor and sausage knotter' Professor Yaffle Chuckabutty while working in clubs in the 1950s. In 1958, he topped the bill for the Blackpool summer season and has been a star ever since. In the 1960s and 1970s he appeared in a number of TV series including The Ken Dodd Show, Doddy's Music Box and Ken Dodd's Showbiz. He enjoyed a stint as a pop star and topped the charts in 1965 with Tears. In 1989, he was put on trial for tax evasion but was cleared of all charges.
