Early-life:
Born Declan Patrick MacManus in London on August 25, 1954. His mother, whose maiden name was Costello, managed a record shop and his father, Ross, was a singer and trumpeter. They split while Elvis was in his teens, and he moved to Liverpool with his mum. After taking his A-levels, he returned to London to pursue a pop career. While appearing with various bands, he supported himself by working at a cosmetics factory.
Career:
In 1977 he began using the stage name Elvis Costello and released his debut album My Aim is True; a year later he teamed up with backing band the Attractions for the acclaimed This Year's Model, scoring his first hit with Watching the Detectives. His follow-up, Armed Forces, reached the top 10 in America, and he continued to record throughout the 1980s and 1990s, although his albums enjoyed mixed success. He has collaborated with numerous artists, including Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach. Elvis was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. He has also appeared in movies including Spice World, Austin Powers 2, and Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby.
