Early-life:
Robert Carvel was born in London on September 6, 1977. He went on to study English at the University of Sussex before training as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Career:
In 2008, Carvel was nominated for an Olivier Award for his role in the musical Parade. He won an Olivier Award in 2012 for his performance as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda the Musical, a role he also played on Broadway. He made his small-screen debut in the 2004 TV movie Hawking. He has had recurring roles on TV in Bombshell, The Crimson Petal and the White, Hidden and Babylon, and made guest appearances in Doctor Who, John Adams, Primeval, Midsomer Murders and Sherlock. He played Bamatabois in the film Les Miserables (2012). More recently, he played Nick Clegg in the TV movie Coalition and Jonathan Strange in Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
