Martin Clunes (Actor) .. Gary
Born: November 28, 1961 in London
Best Known For: A string of TV hits, including Men Behaving Badly and Doc Martin.
Early-life: Born Alexander Martin Clunes on November 28, 1961, in Wimbledon, south London, into a theatrical family. His father was the acclaimed classical actor Alec Clunes, who died of lung cancer in 1970. His mother used to work as Orson Welles's secretary, and his cousin was Sherlock Holmes star Jeremy Brett. Clunes left school at 16 with one O-level and wanted to be a carpenter before enrolling at the Arts Educational Drama College in London. He started out in theatre and won acclaim for directing The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.
Career: Clunes made his TV debut in a 1983 Doctor Who adventure, followed by a regular role in sitcom No Place Like Home. In 1990 he appeared alongside Sean Connery in The Russia House and two years later in the much-maligned comedy Carry On Columbus. He turned to directing again with comedy film Staggered, in which he also starred. Men Behaving Badly made him a household name - but not until original co-star Harry Enfield was replaced by Neil Morrissey and the series moved from ITV to the BBC. He has chalked up a major success for ITV as über-grumpy GP Doc Martin. Clunes has also presented several documentaries, and appeared in such series as William and Mary, A is for Acid, The Town and Reggie Perrin.
Quote: "I get contemptuous of my own acting and wish I had fewer chins."
Trivia: He won a British Comedy Award and BAFTA award for his performance on Men Behaving Badly.
Neil Morrissey (Actor) .. Tony
Born: July 04, 1962 in Stafford
Best Known For: Men Behaving Badly.
Early-life: Neil Anthony Morrissey was born on July 4, 1962, in Staffordshire, one of four sons of Irish Catholic parents. He and brother Stephen were caught by police during a spree of petty pilfering. They were separated, sent to a children's home and grew up in care. Morrissey didn't have many prospects on leaving school, but turned his life around after enrolling at the Guildhall School Of Music And Drama. On graduating, he landed a job in panto.
Career: Morrissey made ends meet by taking on advertising work, eventually making his TV debut in a 1984 Juliet Bravo episode. The same year he had a small role in The Bounty alongside Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. Morrissey's big break came in Boon, playing sidekick Rocky for five years before quitting in 1992. Six series of Men Behaving Badly turned him into a major TV star. Other projects include A Woman's Guide To Adultery, Happy Birthday Shakespeare, Hunting Venus, Up 'n' Under, My Summer With Des, The Match and Paradise Heights. He was the original voice of Bob the Builder and had hit records as the character.
Quote: "If someone wants to pay me millions to be lazy on a big fat project in the sun, then I'm more than happy to take it."
Trivia: He appeared on the stage in 2006 in Acorn Antiques: The Musical.
Caroline Quentin (Actor) .. Dorothy
Born: July 11, 1960 in Reigate, Surrey
Best Known For: Playing Dorothy in 1990's sitcom Men Behaving Badly.
Early-life: Born Caroline Jones in Reigate, Surrey, on July 11, 1960. She has three older sisters. She learnt her trade at the Tring Park School, a boarding school focusing on the performing arts, which would eventually give her the platform to forge a TV career. Her first proper job, however, came on stage in Lowestoft, where, at the age of 16, she was a member of a chorus line. A director spotted her and offered her a job at London's Royal Court Theatre.
Career: During the 1980s, Quentin had small, supporting roles in a number of projects. In the early 1990s she made appearances in Harry Enfield and Chums before landing the role of Dorothy on Men Behaving Badly in 1992, which eventually ended in 1998. Jonathan Creek offered Quentin a chance to delve into slightly more serious territory. Acting projects since include Life Begins, Blue Murder, Life of Riley, Just William, Dead Boss, Switch and Dancing on the Edge. Quentin also presents Restoration Home (she has dabbled in property restoration herself on numerous occasions) and has begun a second TV career as a travelogue presenter thanks to series such as A Passage Through India and Caroline Quentin's Cornwall.
Quote: "Reaching 50 is a reason for great celebration, if you ask me, because we all know people at this stage who haven't made it. In the end, it's so much better than the alternative."
Trivia: In 2004, Quentin received a special recognition gong at the National Television Awards.
Leslie Ash (Actor) .. Deborah
Born: February 19, 1960 in London
Best Known For: Men Behaving Badly.
Early-life: Born February 19, 1960. Her sister, Debbie, was a dancer with Hot Gossip. Ash had drama training at the Italia Conti School, and made her TV debut at the age of four in a Fairy Liquid advert. She now says of the experience: "I don't believe in putting kids into that business. I remember getting really bored and very hot. But I don't blame my parents, it's the sort of thing that all children think they'd like to do - until they actually do it."
Career: After a spell as a model, Ash's big break came when she was cast in cult movie Quadrophenia in 1979. She then appeared in Nutcracker, The Curse of the Pink Panther and Dead on Time before starring in hit TV drama Cats Eyes in 1985. Since then, she's had roles in Haggard, Stay Lucky, and really hit the big-time with Men Behaving Badly. She also spent three years in Where the Heart Is.
Quote: "The first sign of ageing in a woman is around the mouth."
Trivia: Away from acting, she co-owns several clubs and restaurants, including Teatro in London's West End.
