Steve Carell (Actor) .. Gru/Dru
Born: August 16, 1962 in Concord, Massachusetts
Best Known For: The US version of The Office and a string of hit movies.
Early-life: Steven John Carell was born in Concord, Massachusetts on August 16, 1962, to an Italian-American family (their original surname, Carselli, was shortened by his grandfather). His father was an electrical engineer, his mother a psychiatric nurse. Carell studied at an all-boys private institution. After graduating from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, he honed his performing skills with Chicago's Second City comedy troupe.
Career: During the 1990s, Carell taught an improvisational comedy class, wrote for The Dana Carvey Show and was one of the correspondents on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He impressed critics with supporting roles in Bruce Almighty (2003) and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004). In 2005, he co-wrote and starred in The 40 Year Old Virgin, which thrust him into the mainstream. He also shone in Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and helped turn the US version of British sitcom The Office into a big success. Since then he's starred in the likes of Date Night (2010), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), Hope Springs (2012) and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013). He left The Office in 2011 to concentrate on movies.
Quote: "I have no idea where my pathetic nature comes from. If I thought about it too long, it would depress me."
Trivia: He voices Gru in the Despicable Me movies.
Kristen Wiig (Actor) .. Lucy
Born: August 22, 1973 in Canandaigua, New York
Best Known For: Bridesmaids and the Despicable Me films.
Early-life: Born Kristen Carroll Wiig in Canandaigua, New York, on August 22nd, 1973. Her father is of Norwegian and Irish ancestry and her mother is of English and Scottish descent. She relocated with her family to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, when she was three and later moved to Rochester, New York. She studied art at the University of Arizona, where she also began acting. After dropping out of her studies she moved to Los Angeles, where she joined the sketch comedy troupe The Groundlings.
Career: In 2003, Wiig made her TV debut in The Joe Schmo Show, a spoof of reality TV. Her big break came in 2005 when she joined Saturday Night Live (SNL). She quit the show in 2012 although she has since returned as a host. During her time on SNL, she also appeared on the big screen in Knocked Up, Ghost Town, Adventureland, Date Night and Paul. Her movie breakthrough came in 2011 when she co-wrote and starred in the hugely popular Bridesmaids. She has also voiced characters in Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, How to Train Your Dragon and its 2014 sequel, and the Despicable Me films in two different roles.
Quote: "People always call me a comedian. And I don't really see myself like that. I guess I just consider myself an actor who does comedy."
Trivia: Wiig used to be a waitress in the executive dining room of Universal Studios. In 2011, she was voted one of Peta's sexiest vegetarians.
Trey Parker (Actor) .. Balthazar Bratt
Born: October 19, 1969 in Conifer, Colorado
Miranda Cosgrove (Actor) .. Margo
Steve Coogan (Actor) .. Fritz/Silas Ramsbottom
Born: October 14, 1965 in Middleton, Lancashire
Best Known For: Playing hopeless presenter Alan Partridge.
Early-life: Stephen John Coogan was born on October 14, 1965, in Middleton, Lancashire. His parents are Irish and he is the fourth of seven children. It was clear from an early age he was a natural mimic. After leaving the Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre he became an impressionist, and featured on Spitting Image and the Royal Variety Show. He tired of being, in his words, "a cut-rate Rory Bremner" and decided to create characters of his own. The decision paid off, and he won the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1992.
Career: After becoming a cult favourite with Radio 4's On the Hour, Coogan made his TV breakthrough in 1993 with roles on Saturday Zoo and The Day Today. The former introduced his foul-mouthed Mancunian layabout Paul Calf, and the latter brought his most famous radio creation, Alan Partridge, to the small screen. He appeared in horror spoof Dr Terrible's House of Horrible and also made a handful of hit-and-miss films, including Terry Jones's version of Wind in the Willows, The Parole Officer and 24 Hour Party People. He's enjoyed success in America with such films as Around the World in 80 Days, A Night at the Museum and Tropic Thunder. In 2010 he appeared with Rob Brydon in contemplative BBC sitcom The Trip, and more recently in its sequel, The Trip to Italy. He also co-wrote and starred in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa and Philomena.
Quote: "When my life has been the subject of tabloid intrusion, what I have never done is get engaged in justifying myself. Celebrities who go round apologising are pitiful, and don't do themselves any favours."
Trivia: Coogan and his writing partner, Henry Normal, own Baby Cow Productions, which has backed such hits as Human Remains, Moone Boy, Gavin & Stacey, Nighty Night and The Mighty Boosh.
Julie Andrews (Actor) .. Gru's Mom
Born: October 01, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey
Best Known For: The Sound of Music.
Early-life: Born Julia Elizabeth Wells in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on October 1, 1935. Her autobiography, Home, revealed she was the result of her mother's affair with a family friend. She regarded Ted Wells, her mother's first husband, as her father, but they split when she was young, and her mother went on to marry singer Ted Andrews. The couple started a musical double act, during which time they discovered Julie had a four octave range. She began singing lessons when she was eight, and made her professional debut in stage show Starlight Roof four years later.
Career: Royal Variety and pantomime performances made Andrews a famous name in the UK. In 1954, she was offered the lead in The Boy Friend on Broadway. That led to her being cast in the first production of My Fair Lady in 1956, but she lost out on the movie role to Audrey Hepburn. Instead, she won an Oscar for Mary Poppins - her first film. The Sound of Music was a massive hit in 1965, but a string of flops dogged her through the late 1960s and mid-1970s; even her award-winning variety-style TV show The Julie Andrews Hour, was cancelled after one season. Movies since include 10, SOB, Victor/Victoria, The Princess Diaries and its sequel, and three Shrek movies. She writes children's books under her married name of Julie Edwards, and won a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2010. Andrews returned to the London stage for a one-off concert later that year.
Quote: "Sometimes I'm so sweet even I can't stand it."
Trivia: Andrews was made a Dame in 1999. She's been married twice - she worked on many projects with her second husband, Blake Edwards, who died in 2010. Andrews lost her singing voice following an operation to remove non-cancerous nodules from her throat in 1997.
