Best Known For: Playing Karen McDonald in Coronation Street

Early-life: Born Sarah Anne Jones in Chadderton, Greater Manchester, on August 27, 1978. Her father is an engineer and her mother a secretary; she has an older brother called Gary. At 10, Suranne joined the Oldham Theatre Workshop, where she worked alongside Anna Friel, Lisa Riley and Antony Cotton. After leaving school at 16, she appeared in various stage productions, but by 2000, work dried up and she considered quitting. Landing the role of factory worker Karen in Coronation Street changed her mind.

Career: Jones initially signed a three-month contract with Corrie, but the character proved such a big hit she stayed for four years. Shortly after quitting the soap, she won a part opposite Ray Winstone in Vincent. She went on to star in the TV dramas Strictly Confidential, Dead Clever, Harley Street, Unforgiven, Five Days, Single Father, Doctor Who, The Secret of Crickley Hall and Scott & Bailey. Away from the small screen, she has appeared on stage in A Few Good Men and was seen alongside Joss Stone in the film Snappers, in which she played a stunt woman-turned-B&B owner. She continues to appear on stage, but remains best known for her TV work.

Trivia: She devised the format of Scott & Bailey with her friend and former Coronation Street co-star Sally Lindsay, who was meant to take a leading role but was forced to drop out after becoming pregnant with twins. Instead, she plays the smaller part of Jones's sister.

Best Known For: Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey.

Early-life: Rose Eleanor Arbuthnot-Leslie was born in Aberdeen on February 9, 1987 to parents of Scottish nobility. She was raised at Lickleyhead Castle in Aberdeenshire. Rose went on to attend a public school in England and it was here that she developed a passion for acting. She went on to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She made her TV acting debut in the 2007 documentary Locked Up Abroad, and won a Scottish Bafta Award for her performance in the 2009 TV movie New Town.

Career: Leslie's breakthrough role came as housemaid Gwen Dawson in ITV drama Downton Abbey. Since then, she has starred in HBO drama Game of Thrones, Channel 4 drama Utopia and ITV drama The Great Fire. More recently, she has starred in Luther. Her film credits include Now Is Good (2012) and The Last Witch Hunter (2015). In 2010, she starred in Bedlam at the Globe Theatre.

Best Known For: A string of TV roles.

Early-life: Paterson was born in London on June 22, 1965. He trained to be an actor at the Studio '68 of Theatre Arts, London, and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. In 1989, he made his TV debut in the drama Streetwise. Roles followed in The Bill, Between the Lines, Soldier Soldier, Neverwhere, and Casualty.

Career: Joseph has starred in a number of TV shows, playing recurring roles in My Dad's the Prime Minister, William and Mary, Green Wing, Jekyll, Hyperdrive, Chop Socky Chooks, That Mitchell and Webb Look, Survivors, and Peep Show. More recently, he has starred in Law & Order: UK, The Leftovers, Babylon, and Safe House. His film credits include In the Name of the Father (1993), The Beach (2000) and The Other Man (2008).

Trivia: In 1991, Joseph won second prize in the Ian Charleson Awards for his 1990 performances of Oswald in King Lear, Dumaine in Love's Labour's Lost, and the Marquis de Mota in The Last Days of Don Juan, all for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Best Known For: Playing Cleveland O. Petty in Band of Brothers.

Early-life: Born September 9, 1972 in the United Kingdom to actress Polly James. Adam trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama alongside Dominic West and Daniel Evans. He graduated in 1996.

Career: After graduating, James started playing small roles in various TV series, including The Bill, Let Them Eat Cake and The 10th Kingdom, as well as such TV films as Sharpe's Regiment (1996). In 2001, he came to prominence in TV series Band of Brothers. He has made guest appearances in Holby City and he also played Pete Guildford for 17 episodes of Casualty in 2005. His other notable TV credits include Doctor Who, Extras, Ashes to Ashes and Secret Diary of a Call Girl. He has also appeared in a number of plays, such as The Pride, King Lear and Much Ado About Nothing. He played the Prime Minister in a production of King Charles III that was performed in the West End and on Broadway. James also played the Prime Minister in the TV version of King Charles III.

Early-life: Born on June 1, 1969 in Kingston upon Hull and raised in Birmingham. Lolita trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1990. She appeared in the TV film A Masculine Ending in 1992.

Career: From 1993 to 1999, Chakrabarti played WPC Jamilla Blake in TV crime drama The Bill. She has since appeared in such TV series as Fortysomething, The Casual Vacancy, Holby City, Silent Witness, My Mad Fat Diary, Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands and Born to Kill. She is also a writer and producer. Her play Red Velvet had a sold out run in London before being transferred to Off-Broadway and later performed at the Garrick Theatre in London's West End as part of Kenneth Branagh's season in 2016. Chakrabarti also runs Lesata Production with Rosa Maggiora and they produced the short film Of Mary (2011).

Trivia: For Red Velvet, she won the Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright at the 2012 Evening Standard Awards.

Early-life: Born on May 8, 1984 in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland. He attended St Columba's High School. Initially, he dreamed of becoming a football player and often went to watch Celtic matches with his brother Barry. After he finished school, he signed for local professional football team Greenock Morton.

Career: Despite having no acting experience, Compston was cast in the lead role in Ken Loach's Sweet Sixteen (2002). Following this, he got a regular role as Ewan Brodie in Monarch of the Glen. He also reunited with Loach when he appeared in Tickets (2005). Compston has since appeared in a number of films, including Red Road (2006), True North (2006) and The Damned United (2009). He also starred in SoulBoy (2010). In 2012, he was cast in the police drama Line of Duty as the lead character, Steve Arnott. He also played Peter Manuel in the ITV mini-series In Plain Sight.

Quote: 'The last time I threw a punch was in primary school, and that was probably a slap.'

Trivia: He successfully fought with the local council to have Sweet Sixteen reduced to a certificate 15 so that teenagers in his area could learn from it.

Early-life: Born on May 27, 1990 on the Isle of Skye. Lorne graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2015, where he worked with the likes of director Ken Loach.

Career: MacFadyen's early professional acting credits include Ken Loach's The Angels' Share (2012) and Electric Man (2012). He also appeared in two episodes of ITV detective drama Shetland and the short film Exchange and Mart (2014). In 2016, MacFadyen joined the ensemble cast of period crime drama Grantchester as Phil, which was his first role after graduation. He also appeared in detective drama The Level and starred alongside Michelle Keegan in drama series Tina and Bobby.

Quote: 'My mum's a nurse and my dad's a mechanic, so the acting has come out of the blue really, but they're really excited about what I'm doing. It's all new territory, but I definitely get my work ethic from them - they're very hard workers.'

Early-life: Cal was born in Govan, Glasgow, on November 24, 1963. He discovered acting at Glasgow University after a knee injury ruined his chances of playing professional football. After a brief spell at Bristol Old Vic drama school, Cal was cast in a number of small roles at Glasgow's Citizen Theatre.

Career: After moving to London, MacAninch spent a year working in telesales jobs between auditions until he was cast in Edinburgh-set legal drama The Advocates. After making a number of guest appearances on TV shows, he landed recurring roles in Rockface, Sorted, HolbyBlue and Wild at Heart. More recently, he has starred in Downton Abbey, Silent Witness and Mr Selfridge.

Quote: On Mr Selfridge: 'I walked onto the set for the first time and I thought it was so beautiful.'
