Early-life:
Chloe Stevens Sevigny was born in Darien, Connecticut, on November 18, 1974. She was an independent, forthright youngster with a keen interest in fashion and street culture. She felt uncomfortable in her wealthy hometown surroundings and would look forward to visits to nearby New York. During a trip to the Big Apple, she was spotted by a fashion editor for Sassy magazine, who was impressed by her relaxed style and hired her as an intern. Following her move to Brooklyn, she began working as a model.
Career:
A chance encounter with aspiring film-maker Harmony Korine in the mid-1990s changed Sevigny's career path. He and collaborator Larry Clark cast her as the leading actress in the controversial film Kids (1995), catapulting her into the limelight. Job offers came flooding in, but motivated by the quality of roles rather than huge pay cheques, she often chose independent movies over mainstream offerings. Her performance alongside Oscar-winner Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry (1999) increased her profile further, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Other credits include American Psycho (2000), Melinda and Melinda (2004), and Manderlay (2005). She received a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 2010 for her role in HBO drama Big Love. More recently, she has starred in Hit & Miss, American Horror Story: Asylum, Lovelace (2013), Portlandia, The Mindy Project and Those Who Kill.
