Early-life:
Born Anastacia Lyn Newkirk on September 17, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, but was raised in New York. She comes from a showbusiness family: her father was a singer, her mother was a Broadway musical actress, and they sent their daughter to the Professional Children's School of Manhattan. At the age of 13, she was diagnosed with Crohn disease, a chronic intestinal illness, and had to have part of her small intestine removed.
Career:
Despite her health problems, Anastacia developed a career as a dancer, appearing on MTV and in music videos for the likes of Salt-N-Pepa. Her path to singing stardom began in 1999 when she was a finalist on The Cut, an MTV talent show. Afterwards, she was snapped up by a record company who released her first album, Not That Kind, a year later. It was a massive success, selling more than two million copies in Europe and Asia. By 2001 she was also a success in her native America. She continues to tour and release records.
